An autopsy will be done today on a man killed in a weekend snowmobile accident.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident that also sent a second man, 44, to hospital with serious injuries, but RCMP spokesman Sgt. Wayne Newell says it's believed that the driver hit an embankment and the snowmobile and both men went airborne.
The 63-year-old Gander man was killed after he hit his head, Newell says, explaining that the men may not have seen the embankment as they were coming off a pond.
The passenger is still in serious condition, Newell says.
It took some time for police to get to the accident scene in an area commonly referred to as Jonathan's Pond, near Whitman's Island, because it was only accessible by snowmobile.
The 63-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while the younger man was sent to hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Police are not releasing names yet as not all next of kin have been notified.
