Bowlers break through at Winter Games

To pull bowler Jordan Noftall aside at the 2010 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Grand Falls-Windsor you better have good hearing.
Noftall and his teammates representing St. John's/North have been cheering each other on to the point where his vocal cords are all but lost.
"It's fun. I have made lots of friends and we cheer for one another," he said. "We struggled in the start, but we finished off good."
Noftall is a bowler with impressive lineage. His father and grandfather are both members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Bowling Hall of Fame.
Noftall says he and his father often practice on weekends and his dedication to the sport is starting to show - On Monday he threw five strikes in a row leaving the boys team in a tie for first place.
"My father has gone to five nationals; I went to my first last year," said Noftall who brought a silver medal back from the national competition. Even with the lessons he receives from his family, Noftall is quick to give credit to his coaches as well.
"Over the past years my coaches taught me a lot," he said. "It's a once in a lifetime experience and I'll treasure it. I try my best, that's all."
One of Noftall's teammates is also listening to the coaches and trying his best. In doing so, he bowled a game that shattered his personal average by 91 points.
Shaughn Connors, rolled a 193 - his highest single game to date.
The Special Olympian took his coaches' advice and is now taking his time before he sends the ball hurling down the alley.
"My coach said to take my time and good things would happen so, I took my time and a good thing happened," said Conners.
He and the mixed team finished first overall and earned a bye to the gold medal game, ensuring Conners of a medal in Grand Falls-Windsor. He says he has bowling trophies, but nothing like a medal at the Winter Games.
"I didn't think that would happen. Yesterday I didn't get many strikes, but today I got a lot because I took my time," he said. "Tomorrow, no matter what happens, I win a medal."
It is Conners' first time in Grand Falls-Windsor and, with the success he has found here, he is looking forward to going back to St. John's and telling everyone about his experience.
"I'm really excited to be here," he said. "I think I'm going to remember how much fun I had in Grand Falls-Windsor and Holiday Lanes."
He'll have an impressive medal as a reminder.
