Thousands of items left behind by Vancouver Olympic spectators, including hundreds of coveted red mittens and even more umbrellas, will soon be lost forever.
The official lost and found for the Olympics and Paralympics is set to close at the end of the day.
Ellen Babers, senior project manager for event services for the Games, says there are about 3,500 items still at the lost and found centre in Vancouver.
She says they're mostly "mundane" things such as cellphones, camera cases, keys, about 500 umbrellas and three bags of red Olympic mittens. Personal items like passports and wallets have been turned over to police.
Babers says anything left over after Friday will be handed over to a coalition of inner-city community groups, who will use what they can or sell the items to raise money.
Babers says the lost and found centre has reunited about 700 items with their owners since the Games began.
