Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones says something must be done immediately to deal with the huge potholes and lack of signage warning commuters of problems on the section of highway between Red Bay and L'Anse au Clair.
Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair, said the section of road between Red Bay and L'Anse au Clair is paved, but is deteriorating quickly. Since the opening of Phase 3 of the Trans-Labrador Highway linking southern Labrador with Happy Valley-Goose Bay, traffic volumes have tripled while road maintenance budgets have not increased.
"Eight people have already complained to my office that they have damaged their vehicles because of the large potholes in this section of road and the lack of signage warning of the danger," Jones said. "I've brought this matter to the attention of Transportation and Works Minister Tom Hedderson and I am hopeful he will recognize that an immediate investment is required to address the impact that increased traffic flow is having on this section of highway.

Drove this stretch of road on 14th May 2010, it was definitely in disrepair. This highway lacks signage, safety rails, reflectors, delineators, etc. Would not want to drive at night on this highway. We have vehicle going at high speeds avoiding supersized potholes and driving on a non-standard shoulder width. A better job must be done on the condition of this highway. Drainage of water on this highway as well as the rest of the TCH must be dealt with.
