Search and rescue officials in Halifax said today that poor weather conditions were making it impossible to conduct a search for a missing plane near Cartwright.
The Piper twin-engine aircraft operated by North Wind Aviation in Happy Valley-Goose Bay has been missing since mid-morning Wednesday.
The pilot and a passenger were flying from Goose Bay to Cartwright. They were also scheduled to make a stop in Black Tickle before returning to Goose Bay.
The pilot radioed his intentions to land at Cartwright at about 10:30 a.m., but the plane never arrived. It's believed the plane was about 110 kilometres from Cartwright when the radio message was received.
There was a limited search on Wednesday, and attempts by a Canadian Forces Hercules airplane to pick up any communication signals from the missing plane were unsuccessful.
The Telegram has confirmed that the plane was not carrying an emergency locator beacon.
A?spokeswoman at the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, Jeri Grychowski, said today that visibility in the area was about 200 feet, with overcast skies.
Snow was also in the forecast, she said.
"We now have to wait until the weather allows us to get up in the air,"?Grychowski said.
She added that conditions were not expected to improve throughout the day.
The area is quite rugged, with hills and heavy forests, she explained.
