Athletes to be honoured at Friday event

The top high-school athletes, coaches and administrators will be honoured Friday at the Airport Comfort Inn in St. John's.
The Brother G.I. Moore Student Athlete of the year awards are given to graduating students, both male and female, who best demonstrate the ideals of athleticism, sportsmanship, academic excellence and leadership. Winners receive a certificate, scholarship and ring.
The female athlete of the year is Kristan Cooze from Stephenville High. Cooze excels in basketball, track and field, and ice hockey, while maintaining a high academic average.
The male athlete of the year is Brandon Parrott from Carbonear Collegiate. Parrott has been involved in a variety of sports throughout all three years of high-school, including track, basketball and ball hockey. His academic average is 85 per cent.
The coach of the year for 2010 is Rhonda Martin from Cloud River Academy in Roddickton. Martin began an impressive volleyball program in her community and has led teams to numerous provincial titles. She has also coached ball hockey, badminton and softball teams at her school.
Selby Noseworthy of Canon Richards High in Flower's Cove will also receive a coaching service award for his 30 years of coaching a variety of high-school sports.
The Honor Award is the highest award given by School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador. This year's recipient will be Gerald Wheeler of Gill Memorial in Musgrave Harbour. Wheeler has served SSNL in almost every capacity for 31 years. He has served as zone president, regional director, vice president, president and past president. He has represented SSNL five times at the national level and has represented our province four times at Canada Games.
Regional Recognition Awards will be given to a recipient from each of the eleven regions in Newfoundland based on their work for SSNL within their area.
