Indiana Pacers' forward Danny Granger will be in St. John's Friday to participate in the first annual City Stars NBA camp.
Granger, who was winner of the NBA's Most Improved Player award in 2008-09, will hold the camp at the YMCA on New Cove Road.
The camp is titled Danny Granger Offensive Attack.
"He is here to talk to the kids about what it takes to become an elite basketball player, the road he went down, and also to work with the kids on shooting and some offensive moves," said City Stars program director Erica (Coultas) Kennedy.
The six-foot-eight Granger, a forward/guard, led the Pacers last season with a 24.1 points-per-game average.
"It's the first time an NBA player has ever been to Newfoundland to do a camp and we are pretty excited," said Kennedy, a former Memorial Sea-Hawks star.
City Stars Basketball League is for players five to 16 years of age.

Lord God! Justin if you don't want to send your kids, don't send your kids, my dear. Such lofty and positive thinking on the part of City Stars is amazing. But it's just Newfoundland, right? There's no need to do anything special for the kids, right?
Granger is a great, young talent with a very bright future and the kids lucky enough to attend this camp will never forget it. -

Great Job Erica and crew! Having such an elite athlete coming to the province will be a fantastic experience for all involved! The children will be so inspired and what a great way to encourage them to continue to strive to reach their goals - which I know your camp is based on! It is also nice to know such a leader in our community exists that has the vision to be able to offer these great opportunities to our future! Nice work!

Justin: It's called a market . If there is a market for it, i.e. people are willing to pay for it, then why wouldn't Citystars do this. I'll bet you this camp is full. Obviously Grainger being here for a couple of hours is not not going to improve a kids skill; it's about inspiration.

Justin's ignorance knows no bounds. If he could read, he would have seen that Mr.Granger led his team with an average of 24.1 points per game. That's far better than second string, and far better than anything Carl English could accomplish even in his dreams.

Hey Philosopher, the article failed to say that Indiana was 18 games under .500 and finished below the Raptors. Folks, I have no problem with bringing in players to help promote the game but don't do it on the backs of ill informed parents. However, we all know that parents here are foolish to believe that their child will make the NBA cause they scored 30 points in a junior high game. So Erica can take advantage of it, just like the Jack Lee's of the world.

I guess the price of her camp will go through the roof. Erica, Carl English will do my dear. No need to charge the parents a fortune to have a second string NBA player come hear to spend a few minutes with the kids shooting free throws.

Yes Justin, because second string players average 24 points per game. Jeez, can't people just be happy for the things that go on around the city instead of having to always tear things down? With all due respect to Carl English, he's never made it to the NBA, and never will.
