The weatherman might not have given them the best day on which to start, but 58 cars set out from St. John’s Monday morning as the 2010 Targa Newfoundland kicked off its first full day of competition.

The majority of cars made it through the day’s course, but five teams did not finish. Among them were Don Shelton and Jeff Porasik in their 1953 Studebaker Commander and Tim Gorham and Bruce Jackson’s Datsun 204Z. Both vehicles are out of the competition after damages incurred in the first leg.

In the open, modern and classic classes, eight cars made it through the day without being penalized, including defending champs Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes, who abandoned their BMW this year in favour of a Dodge Dart.

Canadian Forces veterans Master Corporal Jody Mitic and Corporal Andrew Knisley drove, competing in the modern division in aid of the Soldier On campaign, incurred 35 seconds in penalty and sit in 12th place in the class.

Trailer Park Boys stars and Targa rookies Rob Wells and J.P. Tremblay clocked over seven minutes in penalties in their Porsche Cayman S.

Leg 1 included eight stages between St. John’s and Gander, taking drivers through communities such as Colliers, Southern Harbour and Port Blandford.

Today’s Leg 2 has the drivers navigating through the Exploits Valley region. The leg  includes a new Targa stage in Pleasantview and Point Leamington.

I got to be part of the crew for the Porsche Carrera 4S, but I was also responsible for hauling a lot of the cars over on a big-rig. I even got to drive the BMW M3 briefly! It was wicked!

Real Sports, what makes you think that driving a car at great speed is not a real sport. If you ever trie it you would realize how wrong you are. Ernst Hemmingway once said "There are only 2 true sports, motor racing and bull fighting, the rest are mere games.

A waste of time??!!!! Aside from the sport of Motorcross, the Targa teams also fundraiser for a variety of great causes. For example, Kia Canada is continuing to Drive Change ...Kia has a spicy red Forte Koup SX in the Targa 2010 and are hoping to raise $100,000 for the Children's Wish Foundation. Check out kiacanada(dot)ca/targa and on on twitter (at)kiadrivechange or Kia Canada on Facebook. Details on how to make a donation to the Children's Wish Foundation, and the Forte Koup SX can be found at kiacanada(dot)ca/targa. Thanks! Gigi

Targa is terrible, what a waste of time put into this event. Time should be spent on real sports like Hockey and Basketball

Basketball is nothing but a bunch of monkeys running around bouncing a ball! NOT a sport at all!
