Asha Kennedy sets new mark in long jump

Asha Kennedy of St. Paul’s Junior High in St. John’s set a provincial midget record in the girls’ long jump in the ninth annual Newfoundland and Labrador Athletic Association (NLAA) junior high championships, which took place Sunday at the Pearlgate Track and Field Complex.

Kennedy set the new standard with a jump of 4.64 metres for St. Paul’s, which captured both the girls’ and boys’ overall team banners.

Besides Kennedy’s long jump, five other meet record were set Sunday. They were delivered by McKenzie Harding of Brother Rice (girls’ 100 metres, 13.16 seconds and 200 metres, 27.28); Deepal Deshpande of Lakecrest (boys’ 100 metres,12.38); Chantal Barnes of Brother Rice (girls’ 300 metres, 43.86); and George Young of Stephenville (boys’ 800 metres, two minutes, 16.24 seconds).
