The Molson St. John's Athlete of the Year Committee has added a team of the year category for this year's banquet and awards program.
The awards, which were first presented in 1951 (the female category was added in 1969), will be presented during a Molson-sponsored banquet which begins seven o'clock at the Foran/Greene Room Feb. 5 at St. John's City Hall.
This year's female finalists are soccer player Laura Breen, wrestler and runner Victoria Ralph, and basketballer Vicki Thistle, while the three male finalists are hockey player Luke Adam and softballers Justin Gill and Mike Noftall.
The top three teams are Kelly's Pub softball team, Holy Cross/The Dock soccer team and Canada Games women's four rowing team.
Although this will be the first year for an official team of the year category to be included in the awards ceremony, it won't be the first time a team has won in the male athlete of the year category.
The committee broke from tradition in 1976 when it awarded the top prize in the male category to Jack MacDuff 's Brier-winning curling team.
Tom Brewer of Molson-Coors Brewery said the St. John's Athlete of the Year Committee had been discussing the possibility of adding a team of the year category in recent years.
"When committee members approached us, we agreed and we were happy to add the new category," said Brewer. "Molson sponsors the banquet and awards and it's going to mean a few extra bucks, but we don't mind doing it. We fell it will enhance the annual program."
The top female athlete will receive the Margaret 'Mag' Davis Memorial Award, while the Tom 'Dynamite' Dunne Memorial Award goes to the top male athlete.

I would like to know some of the background of Tom Dynamite Dunne. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone in your sports department could provide me with some information on him. Also I would like information on NL boxer Bill Drover. My email address is colinsgoodyear@gmail.com.
