Great cod caught off Newfoundland

The crew of the Belle Isle Banker, owned by the Labrador Fishermens Union Shrimp Company, have been hauling up some big codfish lately on the St-Pierre Bank, some 180 miles off the south coast of Newfoundland. See story below. Submitted photo

What they don't say is what proportion of the fish are that large. Yes there are still large cod out there, but the vast majority of them are much, much smaller. Most of those big guys are gone and so are their genes, the small fish are left to reproduce - the big 'steakers' are dying out.

g-man from st. johns, nl what is a 3NO codfish ? And what do you mean by, '... its the nursery for all steak cod' ? I'd like to understand your comment and maybe some other readers who aren't fishermen would like to understand your comment as well. Is it some cod which came from a nursery and does not represent what's now out in there ?

This is bad news. These are the granddaddies of a lot of cod out there. Anyone who knows enough biology to understand what a cod has to go through to get to that size would be throwing them back. It's just as bad as catching fish before they've spawned. Who needs foreign fleets when we'll destroy the stock ourselves.

Wonder what they will do once they kill off the last of these as well. Pretty sad that as soon as you see a little increase we need to go out and kill it all off before it has a complete chance to recover. Pretty typical though, get it while you can I guess.

I see that DFO is still allowing Draggers to fish on the big spawners, during the spawning season. It seem that nothing has changed for the fish companys, they can still take the big cod, and destroy the stocks. We can't use a cod jigger, but they can still use the draggers. Way to go DFO
