U16 team had Thursday off
Newfoundland and Labrador’s girls’ under-14 team collected its first point at the 2010 Nutrilite national soccer championships at King George V Thursday.
The team, relegated to the placings division after dropping its first game this week, played a 1-1 draw with Saskatchewan. Emily Bailey counted for Newfoundland at the 16-minute mark, giving her team the lead until 56 minutes, when Saskatchewan’s Taylor Ungar evened things up.
The provincial under-14s are off today.
Other results from KGV on Thursday saw Ontario drub Prince Edward Island 8-0, Manitoba whitewashing New Brunswick 5-0, and British Columbia and Alberta playing to a 2-2 tie.
While this province’s girls’ under-16 team had the day off, other teams in that competition played throughout the day at the Gushue Recreation Complex in Mount Pearl.
Nova Scotia and Manitoba tied 1-1, Ontario blanked Manitoba 4-0, Saskatchewan shut out New Brunswick 2-0 and Quebec and Alberta played to a scoreless draw.
Newfoundland’s under-16’s, playing for placing, are back in action against Nova Scotia this afternoon at 4 p.m. in Mount Pearl.
Boys’ under-14 and under-16 nationals
Like their female counterparts, the provincial under-14 boys team earned their first point in Sherbrooke, Que., as the result of a scoreless draw with New Brunswick.
After having Thursday off, Newfoundland’s under-16 boys are back on the pitch in Sherbrooke today for a match against P.E.I.
Both clubs are out of medal contention and playing for placing.
