Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s soccer team put themselves into playoff contention with a pair of wins over UPEI Panthers, while MUN’s women’s team remained winless in Atlantic Universities Sport (AUS) play after weekend games in Prince Edward Island.
In women’s basketball, the Sea-Hawks were winless at Carleton University Metro Glebe tournament, while MUN’s women’s volleyball team beat the the alumni squad in three straight sets (25-22, 25-13, 25-23) Saturday at the MUN Gym.
The Sea-Hawks’ men’s soccer team (5-4-2) is currently in a fourth-place tie with UNB Varsity Reds (5-5-2) with 17 points apiece with two games to play.
Memorial plays at home this weekend against third-place Dalhousie Tigers (5-3-3, 18 points) to finish off the regular season schedule.
UNB has one game left at home to UPEI (4-7-1).
There are only five post-season spots available as eighth-place University of Moncton (3-4-3) has a playoff bye as host team.
Moncton has three games remaining with a nine points up for grabs. The Blue Eagles play last-place Mount Allison (1-8-1) twice and sixth-place Cape Breton (4-4-3) once.
On Sunday in Charlottetown, the Sea-Hawks blanked UPEI 3-0.
Rookie Michael Brushett scored two goals in the win, while the Sea-Hawks picked up an own goal. Luke Olmstead posted the shutout.
MUN won 2-1 Saturday on Chris Pope’s penalty kick and an own goal.
“The standings are still tight so we need to continue to remain focused as every game has big playoff implications for us,” said MUN coach Scott Betts.
In women’s play, UPEI blanked MUN (0-10-1) twice in Charlottetown, losing 2-0 Sunday and 1-0 Saturday.
The Lady Hawks, who have scored only twice in 11 games, finish up at home this weekend against Dalhousie Tigers.
In women’s basketball, Memorial lost all three games in Ottawa, but the Sea-Hawks’ Brittany Dalton was named to the tournament all-star team.
Carleton 75, Memorial 71 (Sunday)
The Carleton Ravens won the tournament championship after defeating the Sea-Hawks Sunday afternoon.
Grace Fishbein was tops for the Sea-Hawks, who out-rebounded Carleton 39-22, with 22 points.
The Ravens led 32-29 at the half.
Concordia 69, Memorial 61 (Saturday)
Dalton led MUN with 21 points. Fishbein scored 11 and Jen Parsons chipped in with 10. Concordia led 38-29 at the half.
Bishop’s Gaiters 82, Memorial 57 (Friday)
Dalton led the team with 13 points while Fishbein added 10.
