Wednesday's Challenge Cup results

The St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians broke open a close game with three late goals as they defeated Techniplex Canada Games 4-0 in Molson Challenge Cup soccer action at the Topsail Field in Conception Bay South Wednesday night.

Rudy Norman (84 minutes), Sean Drew (87) and Paul Slaney (90) scored in the closing minutes to pad a Laurentians lead created by Stefan Slaney’s goal three minutes before the half. John Douglas had the shutout.

In Wednesday’s other contest, Feildians Ernst & Young and Mount Pearl-That Pro Look /Molson battled to a scoreless tie, with Michael Bartellas of Feildians and Luke Olmstead of Mount Pearl recording the shutouts.

Next Challenge Cup action is Saturday as the Laurentians take on Strikers FC at Topsail Field in a game with a 4 p.m. start, while Holy Cross Kirby Group tangles with Mount Pearl at the Gushue Complex starting at 6 p.m. At 1 p.m. Sunday, St. Lawrence and Holy Cross meet up at the King George V complex in St. John’s.
