Challenge Cup semifinals this afternoon in St. Lawrence

The semifinal round of the 2013 Molson Challenge Cup provincial senior soccer playoffs is set for today at Centennial Field in St. Lawrence.

The first game, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., features four-time defending champion Holy Cross Kirby Group (19-3-5), which finished first in the regular-season standings, taking on fourth-place Feildians Ernst & Young (10-8-9).

Holy Cross took four of its six regular-season games with Feildians. The Double Blues won once, while another game finished in a scoreless draw.

The second semifinal, set for 4 p.m., sees the hometown and second-seeded St. Lawrence Laurentians (15-5-7)  playing third-place Mount Pearl That Pro Look/Molson (12-11-4).

Mount Pearl won the first two of the six meetings between the teams this season, but the Laurentians prevailed in the last four.

The winners of today’s games advance to Sunday’s championship contest, which has a 3 p.m. start. Prior to the final, the league will announce its annual award winners and all-star selections.

    According to the NLSA site the Friday games are postponed til Saturday due to heavy rain. Check it out before you hit the highway http://www.nlsa.ca/
