Rain postpones Challenge Cup semifinals to Saturday

Wet weather on the Burin Peninsula resulted in postponement of the semifinal round s of the 2013 Molson Challenge Cup provincial senior male soccer championship in St. Lawrence.

The semifinals — one between first-place and defending champion Holy Cross Kirby Group and Feildians Ernst & Young, the other between the hometown St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians and Mount Pearl That Pro Look/Molson — were to have been played today. However, after inspection of the Centennial Field soccer pitch,  Challenge Cup commissioner Gord Dunphy announced the games wwere being put forward until Saturday.

The starting hours for the games remain the same, with Holy Cross and the fourth-place Feildians tangling at 1 p.m., and second-place St. Lawrence squaring off with third-place Mount Pearl at 4 p.m.

The semifinal winners will meet for the championship at 3 p.m. Sunday at Centennial Field.

Individual award-winners and the league all-star team will be announced prior to the title contest.
