St. Lawrence blanks Mount Pearl twice; Crusaders shutout Feildians at KGV
Home proved to be the perfect medicine for the St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians.
After going without a win through their first six games of the 2014 Molson Coors Challenge Cup soccer season, the Laurentians posted back-to-back victories on their home-opening weekend at Centennial Field, shutting out Mount Pearl/That Pro Look Molson 2-0 Saturday and 3-0 on Sunday.
In the latter game, the Laurentians got first-half goals from Rudy Norman, Evan Myles and Sean Drew, while Drew and Ryan Sheppard, did the scoring — again with first-half tallies — in the home-opener on Saturday.
In both cases, John Douglas posted the shutout.
There was one other Challenge Cup game over the weekend. That was played Sunday at King George V Park in St. John’s, with yet another shutout result, as league-leading Holy Cross Kirby Group remained undefeated by blanking Feildians Ernst & Young 3-0.
Jake Warren scored twice for Holy Cross, giving him a league-topping five goals in seven games, while Jon Hawco had the other marker for the Crusaders,
Thomas Pieroway had the shutout.
