Newfoundland and Labrador’s under-15 teams had to settle for silver medals as four Atlantic age-group soccer championships wrapped up Tuesday in the Maritimes.
In Halifax, Newfoundland lost 3-1 to Nova Scotia in the U15 girls final. Destiny Mitchell had this province’s goal. Meanwhile, in the boy’s U15 championship at Moncton, N.B., Newfoundland also lost to Nova Scotia in the goal-medal game, this time by a 4-1 score. Parker Doyle scored for NL.
At the girls’ under-16 competition in Halifax, Newfoundland won bronze by beating Prince Edward Island in a shootout. The teams had played to a 1-1 tie — with Holly O’Neill scoring the NL goal — before NL prevailed 4-3 in the shootout round, where Nicole Torraville, Taylor Kean, Chantal Armstrong and O’Neill scored for this province and goalkeeper Taylor Doyle made two key saves.
In the boys’ under-16 championship at Moncton, Newfoundland finished fourth, losing 2-0 to P.E.I. in the bronze-medal game.
