Fewer, a 33-year-old from Paradise, won the men’s division in a time of 49:48, while Vaughan, the 26-year-old St. John’s native, grabbed the women’s title, stopping the clock in 56:36. Vaughan finished ninth overall.
It was Fewer’s sixth straight championship, and his time was the fourth-fastest ever run on the Paradise-to-St. John’s course. Only Paul McCloy has run faster than Fewer.
As for Vaughan, she unseated Lisa Harvey — McCloy’s wife — who was seeking her fifth consecutive Tely title. Only one other woman, Nicola Will, has covered the course faster.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, playing this scene in my mind 100 times over in the last 10 years, probably a thousand times,” Fewer said of eclipsing the 50-minute mark. “And it’s just as good as I had imagined.”
Rounding the Harvey Road-Military Road intersection in front of the Basilica, Fewer felt an extra jump in his step down the backstretch, the result, he said, of a monkey off his back.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, playing this scene in my mind 100 times over in the last 10 years, probably a thousand times,” - said Colin Fewer.
“I sort of knew then,” that his assault on 50 minutes had been accomplished. “The 50:11 I ran in 2007, my legs tied up really bad when I was on pace.
“This year, I had the extra jump and it felt great.”
The race was a continuation of the splendid season Vaughan’s been enjoying; she’s unbeaten through six road races this summer.
