Her winning margin is lessened, but she still finishes first by over 80 seconds

There wasn't much doubt in the days leading up to the race, and even less at the start line, who would claim the women's title in Sunday's 82nd Telegram 10-Mile Road Race.

"I'm very happy to win today," the long-time national team member and 1992 Olympian said minutes after jogging past a throng of spectators lining Bannerman Road on her way to the win.

There wasn't much doubt in the days leading up to the race, and even less at the start line, who would claim the women's title in Sunday's 82nd Telegram 10-Mile Road Race.

Calgary's Lisa Harvey cruised to her fourth straight women's title in a time of 57 minutes and 41 seconds.

"I'm very happy to win today," the long-time national team member and 1992 Olympian said minutes after jogging past a throng of spectators lining Bannerman Road on her way to the win.

"I knew I had some tough competition because there were some girls who had run some good times this year. So I was a bit worried."

In winning, Harvey ties Colleen Martin's record of four straight titles (1976-1979), but she's still one back of Noleen Wadden's total of five from 1988 through to 1998.

As in 2008, Harvey's nearest threat was Kate Vaughan of the Nautilus Running Club. But unlike the three-plus-minute margin she enjoyed on the younger runner last year, Harvey came in just a minute and 22 seconds ahead this time around.

For Vaughan, who, "doesn't mind taking second place to Lisa," hitting a personal best of 59 minutes and three seconds, shaving nearly two minutes off her previous best set last year (1:00:45), was enough of a personal victory.

"You can only go by your time and how you run," contends the St. John's native. "You can't go by the placing.

"If I had won and were two minutes slower, I wouldn't have been as happy with my time.

"(Harvey) is in a different league right now. I was hoping to get closer to her this year, and I did, so next year I'm hoping to be able to run with her a little closer."

Portugal Cove-St. Philip's resident Caroline McIlroy, also of Nautilus, came in third, 47 seconds behind Vaughan, with Anne Johnston (1:00:19) taking fourth, and fifth going to Karen Stacey (1:04:14).

Harvey thinks it was around the midway point, when she had established a comfortable enough lead on Vaughan and other challengers, that she felt it was in the bag.

"But it was closer this year, so I definitely had to watch out."

If Harvey opts to run again next year, she'll do so in the masters' (40-plus) class. But she insists it'll only make winning that much sweeter.

"Even though I'm turning 40, I'm still going to be competitive. It won't be that much of a change, just a little older," said Harvey, who is married to St. John's native and five-time Tely 10 champ Paul McCloy.

Vaughan's season thus far has included wins in the CHCM 10K race on the Burin Peninsula, the Mercury Athletics 15K and the Nautilus Harbourfront Southside 10K.

But she admits to yearning for that Tely 10 win. In just three attempts, Vaughan has wracked up one fourth and two second-place finishes.

Her desire to win could draw her to the mainland over the remainder of next season and the beginning of next.

"I'm going to plan to get away for two or three big national races with all the elite runners. Hopefully that will bring some more opportunities and increase my experience," she said.

"A couple in the fall, one in the spring and see what happens next summer."

Great to see Lisa!. Strong Performance as usual having seen Lisa run on numerous occasions, shows she takes nothing for granted. Kate sounds likes she is going to a very good runner in the future. Congrats to both of you.
