The 2009 St. John's Molson-Coors male and female athletes of the year, and for the first time a team of the year, will be announced during a banquet 7 o'clock tonight at City Hall.
That's if the weather permits. Should a forecast winter blizzard hits with its expected force today, the banquet could be postponed a week to Feb. 12.
The female finalists are soccer player Laura Breen, wrestler and runner Victoria Ralph, and basketballer Vicki Thistle. The male finalists are hockey player Luke Adam and softballers Justin Gill and Mike Noftall.
The top three teams are Kelly's Pub softball squad, Holy Cross/The Dock soccer team and Canada Games women's four rowing team.
This is the 59th year for the athlete of the year program, and the 41st year since the female award was added. It's also Molson's 41st year sponsoring the event.
The male winner takes home the Tom 'Dynamite' Dunne Memorial Award, while the Margaret 'Mag' Davis Memorial Award goes to the female winner, along with gifts from Molson-Coors. Members of the Dunne and Davis families will present the awards.
Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff will represent the city, while Molson-Coors sales manager Dan Crummell will bring greetings on behalf of the sponsor.
Members of the St. John's Molson-Coors Athlete of the Year Committee are chairman Don Power, Jill Brewer, John Browne, Ross Crocker, Troy Croft, Paddy Daly, Terry Hart, Michelle Healey, Don Johnson, Carl Lake, Brendan McCarthy, Kenn Oliver, Doug Redmond, Robin Short and Jimmy Tee.
