Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, said Thursday MUN has entered into an agreement to buy the Battery Hotel. Facilities and buildings on Memorial’s St. John’s campus and the Marine Institute are fully occupied and the university currently leases significant space off-campus at a cost of nearly $1 million per year. Kachanoski spoke with Telegram reporter Barb Sweet Thursday morning about what the acquisition of The Battery property will mean for MUN, if the deal is finalized. The space at the Battery would allow the university to consolidate a number of units that would be appropriately housed closer to the city’s downtown core. Sweet also interviewed MUN Student’s Union executive director of advocacy, Candice Simms, and some MUN students for their take on the agreement.
