A worker on the Hibernia platform was 10 feet away from being struck by a falling object in a recent incident, according to a notice posted by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB).
The event, categorized as a “high potential near miss,” took place Saturday about 1:30 p.m.

The notice did say the object was a casing thread protector, though there is no description of the object. It weighed 4.5 kg or 10 pounds.

According to information provided by Hibernia management to the Board, it fell about nine metres, striking the deck below, landing about three metres from a rig worker.

A similar report of a fallen object last came from the Hibernia Management and Development Co. in April 2013.

In that case, two pieces of steel grating were found on a deck, below where they should be.

The grating was found on the M17 deck and would have fallen 4.6 metres, according to the report.

No injuries were reported.
