Newfoundland-based clothing store chain Eclipse has finally made it all the way to Canada’s West Coast. The operation opens its first British Columbia location, in Cranbrook, on Friday.

It’s the first of three B.C. locations to open this year. Eclipse opens in Nelson next week and Vernon later this spring, and will also open in Lloydminster, Alta., in the fall, which will bring the number of Canadian locations to 72. Eclipse’s Cranbrook location is a 2,200-square-foot space in a shopping centre, and staff from St. John’s have travelled to B.C. to co-ordinate merchandising, training and the grand opening.

Eclipse marketing co-ordinator Candice Dupuis said Wednesday this year marks a return to the company’s regular expansion, following last year’s focus on establishing an online-shopping presence.

“We’re very excited,” she said. “We decided (to expand into B.C.) late last year, we signed the leases to open the new store and we’ve been getting everything ready for those. … Last year we didn’t actually open any new stores, so it was this year that we got back to our retail expansion.”

Dupuis said sales have been growing on its e-commerce site every month since it launched in August. “Christmastime was very, very busy for us — as it was in our stores as well,” she said. “Overall, we’re very pleased with the progress.”

Eclipse, headquartered in St. John’s, was established in 1974.
