Husky Energy has suspended work on the drill rig Henry Goodrich after a spill of hydraulic fluid during drilling earlier Friday and activation of the rig’s blowout preventer.

The oil company said the blowout preventer functioned properly and the well the rig crew was working on at the time is secured.

The company has estimated about 1,800 litres of hydraulic fluid was released into the surrounding environment. The loss of fluid and a resulting, rapid drop in pressure triggered the blowout preventer.

There were no injuries, but work is on hold while Husky Energy investigates.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board received a report from the oil company, posting a notice to the Board website at about 4 p.m.
