ST. JOHN’S, NL – Grieg NL’s proposed salmon sea farm and hatchery project for Placentia Bay will undergo a more-detailed environmental review after all.
According to an environmental assessment bulletin from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment on Thursday, Environment Minister Eddie Joyce has informed the company an environment impact statement (EIS) will be required for the project.
A description of the present environment that may be affected by the project, effects that may be caused to the environment, proposed mitigations, alternatives to the undertaking and a proposed program to monitor potential harmful effects all must be addressed by Grieg, the bulletin states.
The company will also have to hold a public information session.
Meanwhile, an environmental assessment committee will be appointed to provide scientific and technical advice to the minister and to prepare draft guidelines for conducting the EIS. The public will be invited to provide comment on the draft guidelines.
In July, a decision in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador overturned the provincial government’s release of the Placentia Bay project from further environment assessment without an EIS.
The province has appealed the ruling, and in a statement Thursday, Joyce said the outcome may have implications for the future interpretation of the Environmental Protection Act.
The statement noted Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment officials have met with Grieg to discuss regulatory requirements, the next steps in the environmental assessment process and the company’s plans.
“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to ensuring that development proceeds in an environmentally-sustainable manner,” Joyce said.
Grieg’s proposal calls for a salmon hatchery in Marystown and farm cages in Placentia Bay.
