MARYSTOWN, NL - Ron Bungay has big dreams for Captain Ron’s.

He and his wife, Shelley Killips, took ownership of 5 Dock Row, on Marystown’s waterfront, Jan.1.

They renamed the bar, started booking live entertainment on weekend nights, added charity poker events, and created a busy weekly schedule including karaoke, hockey game and ladies theme nights. Ron promises this is just the beginning of their plans for the bar.

Big renovations are scheduled to change the current layout, add a kitchen, and turn the establishment into a bar and grill. The menu will offer traditional Newfoundland and seafood cuisine and the décor will incorporate the town’s history with the fishery and shipbuilding industries. The bar’s large deck will feature outdoor jamborees and parties in the summer months and will accommodate access for boaters.

Ron says the venture will fulfill his wife’s dream of owning her own bar. Shelley has been in the bar business her entire life. She worked at 5 Dock Row for four years.

Ron was a project manager in the oil fields for more than 30 years, travelling back home to see Shelley and their three kids a few times a year.

When the opportunity came up to buy the bar, the couple jumped at the chance to live together full-time and build their dream business.

Ron and Shelley are positioning Captain Ron’s to become a cultural hotspot and a big supporter of the community. They offer many perks to charities and people interested in hosting fundraisers and plan to continue to endorse Shelley’s favorite organization, the SPCA.

The couple visualizes Captain Ron’s as a destination for both residents and tourists, a place that draws the community together and welcomes travelers to sample NL entertainment, food and culture.
