The former Golf Town location on White Rose Drive will soon have a new tenant.
Three, in fact.
Thompson Centres, which owns the commercial properties, is carving up the former specialty golf shop into three separate spaces, one of which will be leased by Mastermind Toys.
The Canadian-owned and operated specialty toy and children’s book retailer was started in 1984 by brothers Andy and Jon Levy. During the past 30 years, it has grown to be one of the country’s largest privately owned toy and book retailers, with 62 locations in seven provinces.
This will be the chain’s first location in Newfoundland and Labrador and just its seventh in Atlantic Canada, joining stores in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John, New Brunswick.
The remaining two spaces are still available for lease.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the same building in the shopping plaza, Pet Valu has opened its doors to the public. It’s the fourth location on the island and sources say the chain is eyeing expansion to Corner Book and Gander.
The chain doesn’t carry live animals, but does operate as a satellite adoption facility for local shelters. The local Pet Valu locations have partnered with Heavenly Creatures to house some cats that are available for adoption.
And like all the Pet Valu locations in this province, there’s a pet U-Wash where customers can freshen up their pet. As part of its grand opening, the White Rose Drive location is offering free use of the U-Wash for the month of August, regardless of whether you’ve made a purchase. After that, it reverts to the normal rate of $10 for however long it takes to pamper your pup.
A leasing agent for Thompson Centres says there’s one more opportunity to expand on the building to the west of Pet Valu, but it hasn’t been decided if it will be one large unit or split into three or four smaller ones.
Harvey’s expanding
Mount Pearl will soon be home to the province’s third Harvey’s restaurant.
Based on site plans for Smart Centres’ property, it appears the national burger chain will move into one of three new commercial spaces that once made up the Rogers site.
There’s no word on whether the location will include a drive-thru or when the opening date will be.
Milestones reopening soon
Don’t be surprised if Milestones on Hebron Way reopens soon.
In addition to banners in the windows indicating as much, job ads for a general manager and managers have been active for several months and a job fair was held at the restaurant last Thursday and Friday.
The Cara restaurant location shut down in November 2017, and senior vice-president Steve Pelton told The Telegram in March that efforts were being made to find a franchise for the location.
At the time, he said it may reopen under corporate management.
