ST. JOHN’S – The provincial government’s appeal of Supreme Court Judge Gillian Butler’s decision on the environmental assessment process for Grieg NL’s Placentia Bay aquaculture project will be heard in court this week.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal will consider the matter on Thursday and Friday if necessary.
In July 2016, then-environment minister Perry Trimper released Grieg from further environmental assessment via an environment impact statement.
The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) and lawyer Owen Myers contested Trimper’s decision in court.
This past July, Butler ruled Trimper should not have released the project from additional environmental assessment and ordered a full EIS be completed.
The province announced it was appealling the Supreme Court decision soon thereafter.
Grieg NL is looking to produce Atlantic salmon in sea cages in Placentia Bay that would be stocked with fish from a hatchery in Marystown.
