ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The deadline for public comments on the environmental impact statement (EIS) for Grieg NL’s proposed Atlantic salmon aquaculture project in Marystown and the Placentia Bay area has been extended for two weeks.

The deadline was initially today, July 11, but has been moved to July 25.

Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Andrew Parsons is due to make a decision on the EIS’s acceptability by July 31.

The EIS is available on the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment website at www.mae.gov.nl.ca/env_assessment/projects/Y2016/1834/index.html.

Paper copies of the EIS are also available in the A.C. Hunter Public Library and in the Memorial University Queen Elizabeth II Library in St. John’s, as well as in public libraries located in Marystown, Gander and Corner Brook.

Grieg NL Nurseries Ltd. and Grieg NL Seafarms Ltd. is proposing to build and operate an Atlantic salmon hatchery in Marystown with sea-based fish farming in Placentia Bay.

At one point, the project, which has been in the works for some three years, was released from environment assessment. After a court challenge, however, the provincial government re-started the assessment process with completion of an EIS as a requirement.
