The provincial government announced Friday a new interim president and CEO of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. (NLC).

Sharon Sparkes immediately replaces Stephen Winter, who served in the role for 14 years.

Minister of Finance Tom Osborne made the announcement, adding that the Independent Appointments Commission will work to fill the role on a permanent basis using a merit-based appointment process.

“I am very pleased to have someone with the experience and knowledge of Sharon Sparkes step into the role of president and CEO for the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation on an interim basis,” Osborne said. “Ms. Sparkes is very familiar with the NLC board of directors, having served as senior vice-president and chief financial officer since 2010.”

Sparkes’ career in senior management roles in both the public and private sector spans more than 25 years, including 13 years in management with the NLC.

Osborne expressed his gratitude to Winter on behalf of the province for his years of service to the NLC.

It is not the only recent change at the corporation.

There has been change to the board of directors. In late December, the Liberals appointed Finance assistant deputy minister Craig Martin to the NLC board. The appointment is said to be on an interim basis, until the position can be filled by the Independent Appointments Commission.
