A study conducted by Century 21 has found that while St. John’s might be among the second most expensive city to purchase a home in Atlantic Canada, it’s still among the least expensive places in Canada.

The price per square foot of detached homes in St. John’s climbed from $139.00 in 2006 to $166.67 in 2017, an increase of 20 per cent. To put that in perspective, it is seven times less expensive than West Vancouver, the priciest neighbourhood in the country.

Only Charlottetown, at $175 PPSF, was higher in Atlantic Canada.

The survey also found that Newfoundland buyers care the most about having an en suite bathroom (46 per cent) than any other Canadians, and that when looking at home renovations, 89 per cent of Newfoundlanders rate a new kitchen as the most valuable.
