After walking away from negotiations on two occasions the United Steelworkers local 5795 have just concluded last minute talks with the Iron Ore Company of Canada.
Set for a strike vote on Friday March 23, the union had a last minute offer from the company. The call came on Wednesday, and the negotiating committee flew to Sept-Iles, QC. for talks which extended into the wee hours of Friday and resumed again Friday afternoon.
The negotiating team returned today, and went into a meeting with the union executive at 2 p.m.
Union President Ron Thomas told the Aurora he would not have any comment until they were finished the meeting with the executive.
In past negotiations, a return to meet with the executive normally means that there has been progress in the negotiations from the last offer. That could not be verified at this point, however the Aurora expects to speak with Thomas after the executive meeting, and report the latest developments.
The Aurora will keep you up to date.
