The first part of the Water Street infrastructure upgrades is just about complete, according to the City of St. John’s.

The city hopes contractor Dexter Construction will have underground work completed by June 30. The paving work may take longer than that, given the paving is weather dependent. The hope is to have the Water Street-Bishop’s Cove intersection reopen by Canada Day.

“We understand that this project is an inconvenience for business owners, their employees and visitors to the downtown, which is why the city appointed a dedicated business liaison on site to work with the business community to address their concerns as quickly as possible,” Coun. Dave Lane stated in a news release.

An information session for business owners in the area will be held after the first phase of work is completed, to help inform the next phase of the project, which will see the same work take place between Bishop’s Cove and Ayre’s Cove in 2019.

The five-year, $15.5-million project is expected to be completed by 2023.
