2017 Humanitarian Awards handed out

The Canadian Red Cross on Nov. 15, honoured Dr. Andrew Furey of St. John's (left) with its 2017 Humanitarian Award for Newfoundland and Labrador for his work founding the volunteer group, Team Broken Earth, which delivered emergency medical care to victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. The team continues its medical relief efforts in Haiti and has expanded to Nicaragua, Guatemala, Bangladesh and Nepal. University student Patrick Hickey of St. John’s (right) received the Red Cross 2017 Young Humanitarian Award for his many initiatives to raise awareness and response to youth mental health issues such as in 2015 while still in high school organizing the province’s first youth mental wellness conference attended by more than 600 students from some 30 schools.
