CARBONEAR, NL — A Special Olympian who medalled this year at the World Winter Games in Austria is set to have another honour bestowed on her.

At Tuesday's meeting, council unanimously approved a recommendation from the recreation committee to rename the ramp connecting Columbus Drive and Valley Road Sandra's Run in honour of Sandra Smith.

Coun. Ed Goff, chair of the committee, said a sign with a picture of Smith would be installed at the ramp to help recognize her athletic accomplishments.

Smith, who lives in Carbonear and is a member of the Tri-Con Gentle Giants Special Olympics Club, won two gold medals and a silver in snowshoeing events at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

A year earlier at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, Smith returned home with an identical medal count competing in snowshoeing events. She's previously competed in track and field and swimming.
