Annual fundraiser raises money for Air Daffodil program

A tribute to George Jones benefit concert held at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Saturday night raised about $1,500 earmarked for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Air Daffodil program.

The program provides free travel to cancer patients who live in Labrador.

Kirk Lethbridge organized the 8th Annual Air Daffodil Fundraiser while Stan Oliver was the MC for the evening.

Lethbridge’s father died of cancer in 2009.

In 2010, he began organizing a benefit concert to help cancer patients.

While his intentions were to host a benefit for five years, the concerts have continued.

“When you’re sick the last thing that should be on your mind is how am I going to find a way to get to the doctor or specialist. You have to worry about your health and your family.” Lethbridge said.

“It’s (the concert) is like a way to fight back because you’re so powerless when a loved one is sick... it’s like kicking back at cancer,” he added.

Saturday night’s benefit was the second George Jones concert that musicians put off in support of Air Daffodil, Lethbridge said.

As long as there is a need for a benefit, musicians are willing to step onto the stage, and the audience remains enthusiastic, the concerts are not likely to stop anytime soon.

“It was a very successful night, a very positive night. The feedback from the audience was great. There was a very good feeling throughout the whole building. We had a great time,” Lethbridge said.
