At 4 p.m. Friday, private ambulance services in communities across the province shut down, leaving only the minimum of emergency services still running.
The action involves privately owned services only and does not include hospital-based ambulance services.
The shutdown is to draw attention to the breakdown in negotiations between the service providers and the provincial government after almost two years of negotiations. (more)

Briefing notes confidential, premier says 11
Members of the public should "absolutely not" be allowed to see briefing notes prepared for him or his ministers, according to Premier Danny Williams.
"There are things that come to me on a confidential basis that, I've got to tell you, that I wouldn't lay out on this table, or I wouldn't lay out in front of the general public," Williams told the editorial board of The Telegram last week. (more)

What recovery?
Canada's economy shed more than 43,000 jobs last month in a clear indication that the struggling economy is still feeling the aftershock of the deep recession that erupted a year ago.
The unexpectedly large job loss - the consensus of economists was for a gain of 10,000 - pushed Canada's unemployment rate up two-tenths of a point to 8.6 per cent and reverses much of the previous two months' jobs rebound. (more)

House whine
Circle the date and make sure you keep your calendar clear, because you won't want to miss this one: Monday, Nov. 30, the province's legislature will reopen for its fall session.
You'll want to see the acrobats, the dancing bears and the man who can spin 37 plates on sticks without ever dropping one - well, actually, none of that is true. (more)

Getting off the ground 2
Before Northstar Network Ltd. can get to work in a facility building aircraft, it must assemble some building blocks of its own.
Two of those blocks fell into place in recent weeks.
First, Northstar achieved the rigorous AS9100B standard set by QMI, North America's leading management systems registrar, for aerospace industry suppliers. (more)

This could be the start of something good 1
After his team dropped three tough pre-season games on a west coast trip to British Columbia a few weeks ago, Memorial Sea-Hawks women's basketball coach Doug Partridge says he has a good idea on what needed to be worked on before they opened the 2009-10 Atlantic Universities Sport (AUS) season this weekend.
MUN lost games to the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University on the trip. (more)

Some Wonderful Grand! 5
They're the bad boys of Newfoundland rock. The guys who wouldn't worry if they see you crying all alone (with a broken heart?). The guys who pour their plastic-cup coffee on the mall floor and don't say anything at all.
That's right. They just walk away.
They are the Wonderful Grand Band.
But what is so wonderful about the leather-jacket-wearing collection of Greg Malone, Ron Hynes, Sandy Morris, Glenn Simmons, Jamie Snider, Ian Perry, Paul (Boomer) Stamp (and the now-absent Tommy Sexton)? (more)

Incredible audacity
In reading the forum article on Nov. 3 ("NB Power deal: good news, not bad"), one can't help but think how fortunate we are to be educated once again by a Toronto-based energy consultant.
Seriously, how stupid does Tom Adams think we are down here in this neck of the woods? He says, presumably with a straight face, that we should turn this to our advantage by simply negotiating a transmission deal with Quebec. Well, there you go, problem solved! (more)
