Three plaques set in stone in Bowring Park now serve as a lasting memorial to the fallen Newfoundland soldiers and sailors who were killed in the First World War and have no known grave.

The plaques were unveiled in front of a crowd of at least 300 people Wednesday, the 93rd anniversary of the devastation of the Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont Hamel.

Child in cemetery controversy passes away View comments9

A two-year-old child in Carbonear has died, just days after her story touched people across the province when her parents' request to have her buried between them was granted.

Amelia Engram, who was suffering from cancer, died Wednesday morning, her father, David Engram, said.

Double standard View comments30

It's a good point, and one that's hard to address: why is it that when 130 paper mill workers get laid off at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper on June 24, they get immediate reaction from the government, but when thousands of fisheries workers watch their fishing futures evaporate, there isn't the same reaction?

The paper workers got a full-court ministerial press: the moment the 130 layoffs were announced, not only Premier Danny Williams, but Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale, Human Resources Minister Susan Sullivan and Justice Minister Tom Marshall were all on the plane to meet with the workers' union that very afternoon. Heck, the news release had the names of a record-breaking five separate media staffers to contact on the bottom.

Atlantic Vision rubs bottom in high winds View comments10

Trudy Hayward didn't think the Atlantic Vision would be making the run between Port Aux Basques and North Sydney Monday evening because of high winds.

When she saw the ferry leaving the Marine Atlantic terminal, it didn't take her long to realize something was wrong.

Criminal history not pertinent View comments2

Re: the story of Shawn Newman ("Convicted pimp found dead," June 1), was it necessary for you to print his criminal history along with a picture before the man is even buried?

Isn't it enough that he was found dead the same day as he lost his appeal?

It must be something new to get in one last kick before he's gone.

It is a similar type of reporting to the bush pilot who was killed a few weeks ago during a rescue attempt (James Hudson), and his past criminal history was reported on. We don't need to know that.

Indian River Festival is growing up Post a comment

INDIAN RIVER – When a blues and rock artist like Matt Andersen visits the Indian River Festival, he’s asked to leave his band and sound person behind.
Andersen performed there last year — his soulful voice filling St. Mary’s Church during an encore that needed no amplification.
