Small municipalities in the province got some much needed help from the Williams government to fund big ticket projects.
In a pre-budget announcement today, Municipal Affairs Minister Dave Denine unveiled new cost-share ratios based on population for capital works projects such as road work, municipal water and sewer systems and recreational facilities.
In total, the province will increase the capital works budget for towns and cities by $34.4 million to a total of $84.3 million per year, an increase of 69 per cent.
From this year on, municipalities with populations of less than 3,000 people will only have to pay 10 per cent of the total cost of capital projects.
Towns with a population of between 3,000 and 7,000 will have to pay 20 per cent.
And municipalities with great than 7,000 people will have to shoulder 30 per cent of the cost of infrastructure projects.
Local service districts will also qualify for funding on approved projects.
“The main problem we’ve been having and why municipalities haven’t really taken advantage of a lot of our capital works programs is because the couldn’t afford their portion of that project,” said Graham Letto, president of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and Mayor of Labrador City.

BillyBee from NFLD writes: Notice lately that Danny and his cronies are making these pre-budget announcements on days when the Cameron inquiry is not setting???. Danny is trying to keep our minds of the fact he and his group fiddled while people's lives were affected forever. Its not working Danny; there is still a few of us out here that see you and your gov't for what you are.

Bob from NL writes: I certainly hope Harbour Grace jumps on the bandwagon and avails of some of the funding. God knows with its antiquated infrastructure it could do with an uplift, especially the roads.
