Kennedy provides details increased RNC resources: government
The Telegram
Justice Minister Jerome Kennedy marked National Police Week today by detailing the increased resources for the RNC announced in the provincial budget.
In total, $3.7 million in new funding will be provided to the RNC to hire new officers, construct new officer accommodations in Churchill Falls and purchase new equipment and vehicles. Included in this funding is $718,400 for seven new officers and additional vehicles for the RNC drug unit, including one officer and police dog to create a new canine unit.
“Keeping drugs off our streets is a primary concern for both the provincial government and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary,” Kennedy said. “Far too often people in our society find themselves dealing with the justice system due to involvement with drugs. It is important to prevent the spread of illegal drugs within our society which is why increasing the number of officers on the RNC drug team and creating a canine unit was a priority for this year.”
Also, $102,700 has been provided for an Internet Crime and Child Sexual Exploitation Unit consisting of one officer and one civilian.
“This unit will be a dedicated resource for the protection of the most vulnerable members of our society,” Kennedy said. “Those who would prey upon our young people now know they are a target and their actions will not go unpunished. No longer will such individuals be able to work under the cover of the Internet.”
For renovations to RNC headquarters, $1.4 million has been allocated for Phase 2 of the project which will include detailed design. Fort Townshend has been home to the RNC since 1871 and these renovations will take into consideration the historical significance of this site, while providing a working environment suitable to the operations of an advancing police force.

Darren from St Johns, Newfoundland writes: Maybe they might now have a look at all the unregulated, and illegal, cash poker games going on here in St Johns area bars and pool halls.
Then again, it's been going on in front of their noses for the past couple of years. If they can't do anything about what's been going on in plain sight, we shouldn't expect too much from them when it comes to inclandestine activities.

john from st.john's, nl writes: Its good to see the government recognizing theat with prosperity comes a rise in criminal activity. Bolstering our police force will certainly help prevent crime and will enhance protection of the public. I just hope that correctional officers are given pepper spray, batons and vests on their person that theyve been asking for for years. After all ive seen them out and about on escorts many times at our hospitals with prisoners acting up . I'd feel safer if they were better equipped to protect the public and themselves. Remember how the (rnc)police had to fight for firearms for years . Now can you imagine dealing with criminals these days without the proper equipment. Public protection will be enhanced by equipping the people properly that protect us daily.
