Party to be held in St. John's in honour of Morgentaler award Breaking News print this article
The Telegram

There’s still more fallout to be had over the controversial appointment of Dr. Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada.
The Coalition for Access, made up of groups and organizations interested in protecting women’s reproductive rights, is so thrilled about Morgentaler’s award, it’s throwing a party.
Brenda Kitchen with Planned Parenthood and member of the Coalition for Access says the appointment of Morgentaler, a well-known doctor who helped legalize abortion in Canada, is a reason to celebrate.
“After putting up with the federal government’s anti-equality stunts for the past two years, we really needed some good news. This is just what the doctor ordered,” she says.
On Thursday, July 31st, the Coalition for Access will host a reception at Bitters on the Memorial University campus to celebrate the award.
“This is a man who selflessly championed women’s rights by providing them with access to safe abortions,” says Charmaine Davidge of the St. John’s Status of Women Council. “The time is right to acknowledge our debt to this man and to others who have fought for women’s right to control their own bodies.”

Dave from NL writes: Beautiful. This is the kind of thing we should really celebrate. However, I'll pass at the thought of sharing a nice glass of wine with abortions in the back of my mind. Not the kind of imagery I like to keep.

Paradise House from Paradise, Newfoundland writes: Its unreal how people think!
Women have spontaneous abortions every other week. Women become pregnant and lose their baby at 8, 10, 12 weeks- naturally because their body isn't ready or healthy enough to have carry a fetus. So, of course- when this happens, we cry, we feel sorrow and we call it a miscarriage
But, when a women opts to go to the clinic to have an abortion (for medical reasons, since she is unable to carry the child to full term), then, this is horrible? This is a tragedy? This is a crime?
Dr. Morgantaler created this clinic for more than just the simple reason of being able to terminate a pregnancy for health reasons. Put yourself in the women's shoes. Put yourself in their life for 2 seconds and live their life.

Abortion is a choice- a personal choice. A doctor has made this choice easier for those who were afraid to make it. The world is a better place for his efforts.

Frances from Newfoundland writes: Bravo for Dr. Morgentaler. A celebration in his honor is as Brenda Kitchen stated just what the doctor ordered . He is to be commended on his work for women's rights to safe medical treatment. It's about time we came out of the dark ages. Abortion is a personal choice, and as Paradise House said walk a mile in someone's shoes ...who are we to judge!! I won't make it to the reception but at home I will raise a glass and toast to Dr. Morgentaler!! Congratulations!

whatever from NL writes: Don't think anyone is taking about spontaneous abortions at 10 or 12 weeks. Talking about a clinical abortion usually at a significantly longer term. Maybe I watch too much David Suzuki and have been swayed by the modern pictures of fetuses in the womb. Before you judge - I ain't no Conservative, catholic christian - I don't believe in a wizard in the sky. Just think it's gross - that's all.

Florence Ross from Whitby, ON. writes: Awarding this man our highest honor is absolutely appalling. He does not only do abortions on women/girls for medical reasons, he rips the bodies of helpless babies from their mother's wombs as a means of birth control. If I did that to my dog or cat or, God forbid destroyed a bird's nest, I would be heavily fined or even jailed. All of you who are so pro-abortion should be forced to watch a video of an abortion being performed;see tiny hands and feet being extracted from the vagina. No, not an entire dead baby; HANDS AND FEET AND BITS AND PIECES OF WHAT WAS ONCE A TINY BODY. The body is completely crushed and torn to bits so that it can be removed easily. The head is crushed last . They say most doctors will not do an abortion after 3 months while others refuse to after 4 or five months. However, there is no limit in Canada as to when it is absolutely illegal to kill an unborn child. I feel sure, with the right amount of money paid, there are doctors who will kill a baby days before it would be born and considered a human being.
Right now, because of this issue, I am ashamed to be a Canadian. And, being one of the life forms on this earth, I am ashamed to be human.
And to you , Paradise House, There is a big difference in Nature taking it's course in aborting a baby as a miscarriage and people ripping unborn healthy babies from the womb. If you are so right why not wait until the baby is born and then kill it mercifully with a lethal injection instead of ripping it apart? ( No, you and your ilk would say.Of course not ! After all that would be murder ! ) Well, do you think the baby feels no pain just because you cannot see it's face or tears in it's eyes ? How would you like to have your limbs torn off of you before having your head crushed in an agonizing death ?
God, forgive us all for allowing this atrocity to happen and grant some of us the power to change this terrible wrong in our society.

Mark D from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland writes: The Plan B pill becoming an over the counter medication demonstrates that Canadian society has accepted a woman's right to control her own body.

Christine from NL writes: Well, apparently the Order of Canada is like hemmoroids. Any A hole can get one. Absolutely shocking! Celebrating abortions? What have we, as a society, come to??

Brenda enjoy your 5 minutes of fame!!

PARDON ME?!? from NL writes: God forgive you for writing such descriptive disgusting images that are completely unnecessary. With all of the horrible things that are happening in this world right now, focusing efforts on more hatred and contempt, is not the answer either. Unfortunately, for someone that is so adamant to try and change something that took so long to change it's too bad that your energy is focused this way ... we're an ever changing planet and society.

Why not try doing something positive (volunteer, celebrate life, take a walk and enjoy God's green earth) to try and make up for those horrible images that you have in your mind.

Florence Ross from Whitby, Ontario writes: Dear Pardon Me ?!?
These are not images I have conjured up in my mind. You can see those videos for real. Sometimes we need to look reality in the eye. And, not that it's any of your business, I do voluntary work, and I enjoy God's green earth . I also want the unborn to see God's green earth too. Not seeing those baby pieces doesn't make them non existent. Is it the Holocaust all over again. ? The rest of the world stood by then and did nothing because they did not see what was happening. A lot of them knew it though. Have we not buried our heads in the sand long enough ? We are suppose to be above the animals, yet, regardless of how many animals eat their young, we are the only species that will rip our young from our bodies. Now , for the love of God, wake up ! I dare you to go on line and find those videos. Perhaps it will change your views. God bless you .

francisca fox from Halifax, Nova Scotia writes: Canada is the only country in the western world without ANY restrictions or regulations on abortion. It is legal for any reason until birth. Morgentaler demands that this is so and demands that his private abortion clinics are funded by the taxpayer. The unborn have a beating heart after just 3 weeks in the womb, and after just over 2 months in the womb they have all their limbs, fingers, toes, and brain waves. Most countries have some regulations including waiting periods, counselling, giving women the chance to see an ultrasound if they wish, in Canada we do nothing. Women are more at risk of having a premature baby if they have an abortion but they cannot even be told of the reputable( unbiased) studies that say so. This is thanks to morgentaler, who is pro abortion not just pro choice.
