A woman who allegedly posed as a Sheriff’s officer to obtain personal information from another person tried a different disguise at provincial court in St. John’s this morning.
Helena J. McLean, 42, of St. John’s covered her head as she tried to avoid members of the media waiting outside the courtroom.
McLean is facing five charges including: unlawfully impersonating a peace officer; stealing mail sent by Canada Post; defrauding TD Visa under $5,000; making a false document; and uttering a forged document. The alleged offences occurred Dec. 2-4, 2008 in St. John’s.
McLean’s case has been set over to Feb. 19.
The RNC says that on Dec. 2, a resident of Empire Avenue in St. John's was visited by an unknown woman representing herself as a Sheriff's officer and claiming the homeowner had failed to show up for jury duty.
The resident was asked to complete an affidavit that included personal information. The resident completed the form as requested.
Subsequent to this visit, the resident learned a credit card she was expecting in the mail had been activated and used.
