City negotiators believed deal was in place to transfer hockey team

The point man for St. John's Sports and Entertainment (SJSE) in negotiations to bring the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) back to St. John's says he "absolutely" believed a deal was in place to relocate the Acadie-Bathurst Titan here and was surprised to learn the team will remain in New Brunswick.

"What else could we believe when we had an e-mail at 9:36 p.m. Friday saying we had an agreement to move the team here, pending approval from the QMJHL?" said SJSE general manager Bill Thistle, who led negotiations that resulted in a tentative deal - ultimately agreed to by St. John's city council - to have the Titan play out of Mile One Centre beginning this fall.

That e-mail came from Earl Dimitroff, the Titan's director of corporate sales and the man who represented the junior team in much of the week-long negotiations with SJSE.

However, despite the intentions outlined in the e-mail, Titan owner Léo-Guy Morrissette decided neither to move to St. John's nor accept an offer from a group of Bathurst businessmen to buy the team. Instead, Morrissette announced Monday he was staying put in Bathurst and would turn over ownership of the Titan to his son and daughter.

"We considered lots of possibilities as we went through this, but frankly, the one thing we didn't consider was that (Morrissette) would transfer the team to his family," said Gerry Smith, who chairs the SJSE board of directors.

Like Thistle, Smith is disappointed in how things turned out.

"I'm disappointed in the process - not from our side, because our management team put together an excellent proposal - but in what resulted from the process," said Smith.

"All the way through, right until Friday night, we had good talks, a good exchange of information in our negotiations, and we came up with a deal we believed was good for SJSE and the city, while at the same time good for (the Titan).

"We had every reason to think they felt the same way, since we had a tentative agreement."

Morrissette, who purchased the Titan franchise 25 years ago and moved the team to Bathurst, N.B., in 1998, is known as one of the QMJHL's most wily owners and as a cagey buisnessman. Thistle says SJSE was well aware of Morrissette's reputation, but says the idea he could be using St. John's elsewhere to secure a better deal never coloured the negotiations.

"If someone comes to you saying they want to move their team - which they did - what are you going to do, say, 'no,' because you think they might talk to someone else?' said Thistle.

Smith points out that Morrissette, in essence, settled on the status quo, but says there was every reason to believe he was sincere in his proposition to move the team to St. John's.

"He came here on Monday and outlined the criteria for moving the team," recounts Smith. "We offered a three-year deal and they came back with a proposal for five years because they said the league wanted five years - which we agreed to - because it would be an indication of St. John's being serious about the Q.

"They went so far as to outline what would be their ticket-pricing policy for Mile One. When you consider all that, you'd have no choice but to believe they were serious about coming here."

Smith refutes any notion the negotiations were rushed, at least from the St. John's end, because of the league-imposed Monday deadline for Morrissette to announce any relocation plans for the 2009-10 season.

"We've been gathering information for a year about the hockey side. We were ready, so when they came to us, we had detailed information to offer and when we began negotiations, we had detailed information to use," said Smith.

Both Smith and Thistle also disagree with suggestions the negotiations with the Titan were too public.

"Not at all. It was a bit of a roller-coaster," says Thistle, "but (stories in the media) played no measure in the outcome."

"I don't think there was anything very much we could have done differently," adds Smith.

The negotiations with the Titan did "let the Q know we are in business for a hockey team," says Thistle, who says the tentative deal could serve as the basis or template for negotiations with other QMJHL owners considering relocating.

The Lewiston Maineiacs are looking for a new home after their efforts to move from Maine to a Montreal suburb was rebuffed by a dispute over territorial rights.

However, Smith and Thistle say there has been no contact between the Maineiacs and SJSE.

Exploration of the possibility of getting an American Hockey League team for St. John's also continue, although Thistle says there is "no focus on any particular team."

Ivan from NL writes: Again SJSE blow yet another deal, Mile One is sitting there with no major tenant excpet maybe Charlie Pride. There is one common denominatior in all hockey talks that fail and that being SJSE, maybe it's time to step back and let real hockey people run real hockey operations

Dan from NL writes: If there has been no contact between the MAINEacs and SJSE, then isn't it about time that contact was made! What if they like the offer that the Titan almost took??? Pick up the phone or e-mail them and get the ball rolling and get a team here for Sept before it's too late for another year. I've already e-mailed the MAINEacs and expressed my opinion on having them come here.

amazed from NL writes: Ivan;
While I'm not a big fan of how SJSE has done things in the past, to say they blew the deal proves you haven't been following. What actually happened is they were used as a pawn by a man who apparently isn't well liked in Bathurst in whatever deals he had going on. I hardly think SJSE shagged up anything, tho they may have been shagged by Morrisette.

Fog Devil from NL writes: I don't think that the SJSE blew the deal, I think Morrisette probably knew what he was doing with getting other potential buyers incase his children backed out.

It's a loss for the city tho.

A hockey arena with no hockey team... such a novel idea? Maybe it'll catch on and the Air Canada Centre in Toronto will only show 50-year old Shania Twain impersonators. Foolish

say no to 'Q' from NL writes: We have what.....1000 to 1500 hockey fans in the greater metro area? We should throw tax dollars at a mafia league in order to placate at most 1500 rink rats? Hell no.

Keep bringing entertainment such as Charlie Pride and Danial O'donnell to the '0', that will suffice. In fact, if the ice plant was removed or mothballed, the '0' would be cheaper to maintain.

Hockey Fan from Mount Pearl, NL writes: To all those people bitching about hockey ticket prices - you want more performances at Mile One, well lets look at the numbers….

Lets say the average family (husband, wife, 2 kids) attends 5 QMJHL games per year and has the following expenses:

4 games x 4 Tickets x $15 = $240
4 games x 2 beers x $7.50 = $60
4 games x 4 meals x $6.50 = $104
4 games x 4 Park and Ride passes = $8
1 game x 2 souveneirs x $25 = $50

Total = $462

Now, lets assume those same 2 parents decide QMJHL is garbage and decide to attend 5 Major Concert showings at Mile One instead. Now lets assume the average ticket price is $80 (going rate for a concert these days). Lets see how it breaks down…..

5 concerts x 2 tickets x $80 = $800
5 concerts x 2 shirts x $30 = $300
5 concerts x 1 CD x $15 = $75
5 concerts x 2 beers x $7.50 = $75
5 concerts x 5 park and ride passes = $10

Total = $1260

Yes, I can see why some people are up in arms, hockey is extremely over priced!!!!

Oh, one more little fact, based on these numbers, the family attending hockey games would need to attend 8 QMJHL games per year. It seems to me the hockey games garner more family fun and outings than 5 concerts for 2 people.

Now, is QMJH sustainable in St. John's? Well, lets see, if we assume 2000 seats belong to season ticket holders (ie. 1000 x 2 tickets) and the target attendance is 4000 people. That would mean the following:

1 - 500 families (of 4) would be required to attend 8 games out of 40.

2 - 2500 families in total in St. John's / Mount Pearl / Paradise, Goulds, etc. woud be required to attend to make every attendance 4000 for 40 games out of the year.

Is that really hard to ask? No, especially when the urban population is somewhere in the range of 220,000 - 250,000 people.

In conclusion - naysayers - stop complaining!

Nuff Said.

Robert from Newfoundland writes: AHHH the mating call of the Newfoundlander in it's native habitat... We didn't want it so they took it away from us. Now we want it and the big, bad Mainlanders won't give it to us. WAAAAAAAAAAAA! Give it a rest folks. The points being made here are almost as stupid as voting Anything But Conservative then getting upset that you don't have a voice in cabinet when they win. Sheesh. You had your chance with a true local team. Owned by Newfoundlanders, with the mandate to give as many Newfoundland kids a shot. And what did you do? Ran em out of town on a rail. Then, you got a second chance. Another local, all he needed was some help. HELP?!?!?! How dare he expect us to help a fellow Newfoundlander when there's got to be someone on the mainland who'll do it and won't need our help. You want to know why there's no Hockey here in September? Try these quotes from a story from today's Telegraph Journal in Saint John, NB:

(Leo-Guy Morrissette) is obviously a very smart businessman and I'm sure he did a bit of a straw poll himself and realized that he may not have had 12 votes. He took a step back and realized that there's a community there that deserves that team and it's great that they're going to stay put.
Long added that it would have been ludicrous to move a team back to St. John's after the city showed disinterest in working with the Fog Devils, which played there from 2005 to 2008 before moving to Montreal.

I've heard a few people mention that we've tried it in Newfoundland once, Savard said.

Those quotes were from Sea Dogs President Wayne Long, and Rocket president Serge Savard Jr., respectively.

That's right people. SJSE, and thus the city, left such a foul taste in the mouths of Hockey owners with the way the Fog Devils were treated, that there was no way they would have voted to move another Hockey team here.

Here's what I say happened. Morrisette wanted out of Bathurst, finds that St. John's wants a team and makes a formal agreement to retain ownership, something he wanted anyway. Except, The league tells him he's nuts if he thinks they're gonna let St. John's have anything to do with their product again. So he's stuck between a below market, in his opinion, offer or keeping the team in Bathurst bleeding money. so what did he do? Sold it to his Kids! Yup, that's the better offer that he all played us for.

A post from one of the other articles in this paper suggested that we try forming a league with Nova Scotia, PEI and NB and get it sanctioned by the CHL. I find only one problem with that. Every city and small town in Canada, with the exception of one, have embraced their junior hockey teams and wouldn't give em up in a dog fight. The one exception doesn't really matter, they don't know what they want anyway, and even if they did, they'd only treat it like crap once they got it.

Some of us have obviously slept though geography class, so for those people I will thy to explain something: we live on an island. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING with any ties to the mainland will ever be able to survive here, not a hockey team, nothing. Our own means of transportation requires a multi-million dollar a year subsidy from the goverment to survive. Until we realize this, we will have nothing. There are those of you who would say who cares, we shouldn't pay businesses to move here. To you I say, fair enough, but don't get upset when you have a 40 million dollar facility sitting empty costing you 1.75 million a year. And it will sit empty, cause lets face it, they can only keep Neil Young and Charlie Pride in pickle for so long.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is You blew it Newfoundland. Grow up and take your medicine like a big boy. If you refuse to grow up, however, let me explain what I meant in all those big words I used in a way you can understand. If you continually push people out of your sandbox, then eventually the only interest in it will be from cats.
