Vale Inco hydromet construction deal set print this article
Mining

The province has officially inked a deal on the construction of a commercial hydromet plant at Long Harbour with Vale Inco.

The deal, which was originally reached on Jan. 29, will see work begin next month.

Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale announced the formalization of the deal Wednesday.

"With the official documents in place, we look forward to the start of this project and the significant increase in local employment it will bring to the Placentia Bay region."

The development agreement includes established timelines for the project to start, enhanced local benefits and greater protection of the province's resources.

Vale Inco is expected to submit its final implementation plan for the project on March 31.

"Initial work at the site will begin in April with site clearing and demolition work and we look forward to reaching the six project milestones committed by the company for the first half of this year," Dunderdale says.

Construction on the plant is expected to be completed in February 2013. The capital cost of the processing-plant project is estimated to be US$2.17 billion.

Still No Start date from St. Johns, NL writes: I still want to see the contacts awarded to date and the date to commence activities. Paper is not worth much these days, if the funding is not in place to back it.

Bayboy from St.Johns, NL writes: The first project milestone should be to erect a bronze statue of Roger Grimes at the entrance to the site...What a visionary he was!.

Dave from NL writes: 1,000,000,000 in the world do not have access to safe drinking world.

The operation of this plant will result in the destruction of a pristine body of water - Sandy Pond.

It does not speak well for the environmental vision of Newfoundlanders.

Sick of Stupid Comments from NL writes: God...you people never cease to amaze me with your negative and stupid comments towards every story that appears in the news. Try to get a life some time and see the positives for a change. If the announcement was that the project was cancelled you'd all be up in arms about that....give me a break...idiots!!!

I Wonder from St. Johns, NL writes: Still no contracts awarded as of today. Going to be a tough sell if people and materials are not in place. End of June if it goes ahead at this rate. Check the webiste yourself. No one has anything, just bids placed. That is not a very good way to get a project off the ground.

AP from NL writes: Dave - do you know how rediclous that sounds?? Newfoundlanders are facing unemployment rates higher than ever - and you're worried about a pond? This project will be millions of man hours in work...and finally maybe some Newfoundlanders can stay at home instead of travelling abroad to provide for their families.
Whats the priorities here - a few fish ??? Or JOBS.
In my opinion - people are always complaining that there is nothing here, then when something does come, they only see the negative and yet again COMPLAIN...There is a common trend here.

Eugene from Town, Newfoundland writes: To AP from NL:
Your answer to our employment woes would be? Perhaps we should go toe to toe with India and try to get some 'ship-breaking' work here. I guess if the consortium that wished to dump garbage from the US here you'd be in 7th heaven. How about trucking our clean water away...as long as it means jobs, bye! YOU are evidence of a trend: 'Jobs for the byes - at any cost'
You should try to open your eyes; other posters here also wish for sustainable employment, but if we simply allow any corporate interests to do as they wish...well, I guess it's time to get a gas mask, don the body condom, and start ordering water from Alps.

Sick of Naive and Know-It-Alls from NL writes: AP and Sick of Stupid are clearly unaware of the big picture and how it affects the entire southern shore. The man-hours will NOT favour Newfoundlanders and the project is NOT going to be around long enough for anybody to retire here before moving way again. It's probably not even worth an experienced person's while to leave their present mainland job to work here at low wages for a few years and THEN go back. Stop talking so foolish and do a reality check. If you're naive enough to buy everything gov't and the Brazilian mining company tell you, then you get what you deserve - the mess to clean up after ValeInco hightail it out of here. Do you really believe they're opening a plant here (with no man-made containment tailing pond) just for the benefit of the locals; out of the goodwill of their hearts ? I laugh at you.

Water Me Stupid from Watertreatment Plant, Newfoundland writes: Come on now. The residents of Long Harbour told them to dump the tailings into the drinking water so they could buy bottled. Did you not get the memo? The boil water order was not enough for them, so they thought they might as well go all out and just import water from St. Johns.
