Stevens' goal in OT of Game 3 gives C.B.N the win it desperately needed

If anyone had suggested to Randy Pearcey that his Clarenville Caribous would sweep the Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars from the Telegram Herder Memorial Championship Series in four straight games, he would have bet them "$10 million against it."

If that bet were made, Randy Pearcey would be a far richer man today.

The defending Herder champs CeeBees are right back in the provincial senior hockey final after a 6-5 overtime win over the Caribous Thursday night at Mile One before a capacity crowd. Game 4 of the series goes tonight and the C.B.N. victory guarantees there will be a fifth game on Saturday. All games in the series are at Mile One, and all have 7:30 p.m. start times.

The Caribous led 5-3 midway through the third period Thursday, but goals by the Delaney brothers - Ryan and Keith - knotted it up for C.B.N., and set the stage for Mike Stevens' goal just over four minutes into the extra period.

Whatever the eventual outcome of the series, Thursday's result puts a fresh new coat of paint on the provincial senior hockey final.

"I told them to play the same way tonight (as Sunday's Game 2, a 6-5 double OT win for Clarenville) and if we get a win, we've got a whole new series," CeeBees' coach Eddie Oates said.

"Some fellas went out there and worked really hard in the last 10 minutes of the game. That's what you need. Everyone's got to chip in."

C.B.N. needed that kind of effort in the late going. Eight minutes into the third, the CeeBees were down 5-3 after a goal by Clarenville's Brad Crann. What's more, after the goal, Keith Delaney said something to ref Ian Hollett, who promptly gave the C.B.N. captain a 10-minute misconduct.

"When you're down and the best player on your team is in the box for 10 minutes, it doesn't help" said Oates, who revealed Delaney wanted to find a "hole to crawl in" after taking the penalty.

The captain's brother helped pick up the slack. Just over two minutes later, Ryan Delaney drew C.B.N. within one on an unassisted effort that popped through the five-hole of Clarenville goalie Jason Churchill. Then, fresh off his time in the sin bin, Keith Delaney scored with 26 seconds left to force OT.

In the extra period, a CeeBees' faceoff win sent the puck to the point and Stevens, who blasted home the biggest goal of his hockey career past a well-screened Churchill.

"As a defenceman, you don't really get many chances to be the OT hero," an elated Stevens said following the game. "But I'm very excited to get that goal. It got us back in the series."

Pearcey obviously wasn't pleased with the Caribous surrendering a two-goal lead with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The problem for the Caribous, he said, wasn't their giving up multiple power-play goals, but lack of effort in their own zone.

"We can't be running around outside our own blue line waiting for someone with a long pass," he said. "We've got to be back in our own zone working the puck.

Midway through the second period, Pearcey called a timeout and "lost it" on his players.

"You can't just put on your skates and say '(We're) the big bad Clarenville Caribous with a two-game lead and the CeeBees are going to pack their gear up and go home.

"It ain't going to happen that way"

With a win under their belts, Oates says it almost makes the CeeBees following it up with a win in tonight's Game 4 that much more important. That means there's no plan to let the foot off the gas in the C.B.N. dressing room.

"If we turn around tomorrow night and come out with a lackluster effort and go down 3-1, what we did tonight was in vain," Oates conceded.

"We'll be ready to play."

bayman from NL writes: It was a good game last night and happy the CeeBees won. Hopefully they will win again tonight. But The Bous goalie is one of the best, from what I seen last night and the first three games he is the only reason that they have a 2-1 lead.

wayne laite from st. john's, nl writes: Great ganme last night but where were all those great Ceebee fans cheering on thier team. Sat on there hands doing nothing because can't beleive they are losing and feel it is their god given right to win the Herder every year. Only time they cheered last night wa swhen they scored. Other than that never heard a peep from them. Clarenville fans doing a better job than Ceebee's fans.

Chuck from Cupids, Newfoundland writes: What are you talking about Wayne? If your team is losing then there isn't much to cheer about! CeeBees fans don't think it is their god given right to win the Herder every year. However, the CeeBees have earned the Herder in each of the last three seasons. Clarenville is a good team that has a great goaltender. I bet the Clarenville fans didn't blow the roof off Mile One when Delaney scored to tie the game or when Stevens scored to win it...

george warford from BAY ROBERTS, newfoundland writes: If wayne laite of st. john's never heard the cb fans cheering, then he must have a hearing problem. then again I don't see any st. john's teams playing in any of the senior hockey leagues. maybe that is his problem. At least the CeeBeeFans has a team to cheer for. Which the mileone centre should get down on their knees and thank because apart from the herder series the past 5 years there haven't been too many more times the stadium has been sold out in the month of april. St. John't doesn't seem to have the ability to ice a team of any calibre to attract any significant fan support.

bayman from NL writes: Dear Mr. Laite:
As a CeeBee fan and I know a lot of them we never said that it our God given right to win the Herder every year. But I will say this to you I hope that you are enjoying the games for the most part they are very good. Hopefully one day St. John's will have enough good players to be able to ice a team again. There is no reason why they don't have one and bring the Caps back. Hopefully this series will go 7 games so we all can enjoy some very good hockey and have a lot of fun.

townie from nl writes: If these baymen hate coming to St. john's so much why are the games hosted in town?
I guess it's to make it easier on all the players who are from town to make it to the games.

Darren from NL writes: To bayman from NL: Clarenville wouldnt even have a team if it wasn't for the good players from St.John's. That includes Pearcey,Chaplin,Ball, Coach PEarcy and many other so before you say anything about St.John's not having good players think again where alot of players that play in the west are from and live. Every team in the west coast has very good players from St.John's, Mt Pearl, CBS, that play for your teams.

a drover from island cove, nl writes: To bayman:

If all of the players from town that are playing with the CeeBees, Clarenville, Deer Lake, Corner Brook, Grand Falls, Southern Shore, Bell Island, Mt. Pearl and Torbay left their teams, there wouldn't be enough players left to have a league elsewhere.

Furthermore, why is it that the CeeBees had to get three townies out to coach their team?

Can anyone answer this?

j hunt from nl, carbonear writes: Talking about townies, the ceebees jr. affiliate is the jr. celtics from town, but our jr. boys in harbour grace are affiliated with Clarenville, anyone know why? Someone gets hurt with Clarenville they can call up a jr. player from harbour grace. Someone gets hurt with the Ceebees, like oates last night, and they call up a celtic when we have our own jr. team. makes no sense to I

The Man from CBN, NL writes: Ok first of all the Cee Bees are coached by three townies! Second their Junior affiliate is from St. John's. Back in 2003-2004, CBN won one game all year, all their players were playing with Flatrock, the next year, someone decides to throw a bit of money around and all the players playing with Flatrock come back to the bay and bring their townie friends. Only for townies the Cee Bees wouldn't be where they are.

Joanne T from Harbour Grace, NL writes: Some of these comments are just plain pathetic. We are watching some of the best senior hockey this province has offered in years and people come on here bitching about nothing more than mere childishness. In my opinion some people are just crying sour grapes for some reason or another. Both teams have excellent coaches regardless of where they live. As for the Flatrock remarks...build a bridge and get over it! Can you blame Moores, Reardon, Crocker, Cleary, Delaney's, French, Parsons, Brown for playing with the team which represents the area they grew up in? Can you tell me that everyone playing for the Maple Leafs are from Toronto? Mr. Laite I will be sitting in Section 108 tonight if you would like me to bring an extra set of batteries for your hearing aid. Best of luck to both teams!!
