If you're going to be replaced on the soundtrack of a movie, it might as well be by Leonard Cohen.

Corner Brook musician Allison Crowe's version of Cohen's much-covered song "Hallelujah" had been chosen by director Zack Snyder to play during a love scene in the recent film "The Watchmen," but later decided it was "too beautiful" and "too sexy," and used Cohen's original version instead.

"It's a total compliment, but it would have been really nice," Crowe said with a laugh. "They used Leonard Cohen, though, so I can't get mad at them."

Crowe, a native of Nanaimo, B.C., has been living in Corner Brook for the past three years. After a successful show at Bianca's in St. John's last weekend, she'll perform at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre tonight.

Crowe, who sings and plays piano and guitar, will be joined on stage by guitarist Billie Woods, bass player Dave Baird and drummer Laurent Boucher, and will play an array of original tunes, as well as "Hallelujah" and other covers.

Crowe's been known to perform songs by musicians like Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Cyndi Lauper and The Beatles.

"It's sort of rock, blues, jazz, and there's a tiny bit of almost bluegrass style in there now," Crowe said of her music.

Opening for Crowe will be her friend, bellydancer and teacher Linda Bursey.

"I thought it would be neat to have something a little different," Crowe said.

On Monday, Crowe will jet off to Europe for a string of concert dates that will take her across the continent, before returning to B.C. in the fall to perform.

She will, however, always return to this province.

"There's music everywhere here," Crowe said.

"I've never been to a place where so many people are professional musicians, and they're such a community. It's crazy, and I love it."
