Funding of $192 million was announced today for 71 community infrastructure projects throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
The federal, provincial and municipal funding will go toward projects such as building a new water treatment facility in Marystown, sanitary sewer and road upgrades in Labrador City, and a new water supply for the Inuit community of Nain.
The announcement was made by Newfoundland Senator Fabian Manning and Municipal Affairs Minister Dianne Whalen.
“Today’s investments in Newfoundland and Labrador will create jobs in communities during these tough economic times,” Manning said. “These important projects will improve our quality of life, as well as help to boost our regional economy now and for years to come.”
Graham Letto, president of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, said now is the time to reinvest in the infrastructure that will encourage economic development and create jobs in the province.
“Identifying municipal priorities in rural areas and providing more money for municipal infrastructure will provide major stimulus to communities struggling to provide basic services,” he said.
The federal government will contribute approximately $63.7 million and the provincial government approximately $90.2 million. Added to the municipal contributions of more than $38.2 million, today’s announcement outlines total expenditures of approximately $192.2 million.

Saucy Face from Nl writes: Ah, make work projects; the back bone of our rural economy. A summer sitting on butts in the warm sun and a winter of drinking beer at home on U.I.C.

Tim from St. Johns, Newfoundland writes: HeII, for what it's worth I just want to get a job. If it takes grants from the feds then so be it. Danny has not done anything to get me back to work after his long winded speach in Fort McMurray three/four years ago. And for those that wonder, I do not collect welfare, and will not work for slave wages, but do not expect the Alberta wages either.

Just a job to pay the bills like everyone one else.

Seamus Connors from Mississauga, Ontario writes: Saucy Face, one of the major reasons Newfoundland has been poor for so long is our infrastructure. I've spent a lot of time across the country and the small towns that manage to prosper do so because of properly laid infrastructure plans. But lets all just be poor and complain about the government. Good call.

Bonnie from NL writes: Wow all this happening in spite of Mr EGO Williams and his tiff with Ottawa. Thank you Prime Minister Harper, thank you Senator Manning. Its nice to see that you two arent as vengefull and vindictive as Danny Castro. See what can happen when people co operate Mr Premier. Your big project now seems to be holding this province ransom because of your idiotic games with the nurses union. Bindidng arbitration whats your problem with that Mr Distator? Oh yes that wouldnt then be all your dea would it and it wouldnt all be done your way.

Sick of Stupid Comments from NL writes: It's just no use with you people and your stupid comments...if there was no funding for infrastructure projects you'd be complaining about that as well...who the hell cares what level of government it's coming from, these projects will keep companies and workers employed during the contruction and when done will leave the communities with much needed infrastructure upgrades.

Bones from NL writes: Tim: I'd like you to explain exactly what obligation it is that Williams has to you for you to feel he should be looking for work for you. Williams did not go to Fort Mac and tell you to come home, he would get you work. It's sad that you want a job and can't find one, but do you really think that's Williams' fault? Why did you move to Fort Mac? Shortage of work, maybe?

Bonnie: I would like to remind you that the Liberals are angling for an election this year and that scares Harper to no end. So it should. There is nothing Harper can do in NL to garner a seat aside from throw money at us. There is simply no other alternative. I'd be surprised if Williams would give him the time of day now that he's spending money here anyway, heh. Look at what's happening....Harper was denied every seat and he just threw a record amount of infrastructure money at us anyway, what gives, do you think? I'm thinking election worries.

JD from NL writes: How can anybody from NL support Harper? He's obviously got an agenda (probably upcoming election) but please don't support this loser, he's already done his damage. If you don't like Premier Williams that's one thing, but supporting Harper when you're a NL'er? That's just ludicrous.

Mary Cadman from Stoney Creek, Ontario. writes: I WOULD THINK YOU WOULD ALL BE HAPPY WITH HAVING YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE MORE INTACT, JUDGING FROM MY TRIP IN NFLD. LAST YEAR. THE ROADS NEED FIXING, POTHOLES EVERYWHERE WHICH LOOKED AS IF THEY WERE BEYOND REPAIR IN SOME AREAS. THIS, IN MY VIEW IS THE START OF BOOSTING THE ECONOMY TO ENABLE NFLDERS TO GET FROM POINT A TO B WITHIN A BETTER TIME FRAME, UNLESS THEY ARE NOT WORKING, OR RETIRED AND HAVE PLENTY OF TIME ON THEIR HANDS. THIS IS A GREAT THING, AND I WISH ALL PROVINCES ACROSS CANADA WOULD DEVELOPE THIS CONCEPT. I WOULD THINK YOU WOULD BE HAPPY TO HEAR THIS.

Skeptical Cynic from Bunghole Tickle, NL writes: Manning is as nauseating as ilk such as Hearn and Efford.

If you choose to continue to live in this province may I suggest you try to salvage what's left of your dignity by shutting the F U.

Rural Upset Newfie from NL writes: Well, well, well, all this money been spent and in our community we dont even water fit to drink, insects, yellow, and slubby when I take a bath or shower.

The Federal Govt three or four years ago stated, every Canadian is entitled to good, clean drinking water!! Where's mine?

This past year we lost the water on several occasions, and even though I have a filter on mind it became clogged. Come on give me a break St. Johns, Corner Brook and all your big town bigots. Danny, you might think you have the world by the tail, but you certainly dont have mind. If every Nflder were like me, Id do to you like the IWA did to Joey - give you a big boot the next election. Remember, your day is coming! Foget the ABC spending our hard earned tax dollars. I hope you never get another night's sleep.
