Testy exchange between premier and radio Open Line host following major oil development announcement
The Telegram
The attached audio clip is of an exchange between Premier Danny Williams and VOCM Open Line host Randy Simms this morning following the premier’s announcement that the provincial government has achieved a Memorandum of Understanding with its oil industry partners to develop the Hibernia Southern Extension. In his Open Line preamble, Simms spoke about the fact that HIbernia Southern Extension is a go and asked listeners if the provincial government should look beyond oil in the province and refocus on other issues such as the fishery and forestry. Williams took exception to the “negativity” expressed by Simms. Audio clip supplied by 709NEWS.

the butler did it from nl writes: WOW ....Danny needs to step down and go back to private industry where people will accept that BS because he pays them to. What a fool and an irrelevant joke he has become. His kids must be ashamed. This is the kind of temper tantrum that has made him the laughing stock of Newfoundland and Labrador and the rest of Canada. He has his supporters and the ones that he buys off with taxpayers dollars and the ones that rig the polls. I'd like to see a real poll done when he doesn't expect it.

He's so arrogant I can't listen to the show. I think he's going for ratings. If that's what VOCM wants then one way to make sure the ratings go up is get Bill Rowe back hosting the show. He's a much better host.

Robert from NL writes: No can not say the Premier is not passionate about things. Randy Simms is an elected official who is wearing two hats and often uses his VOCM job to plug his own agenda.
Common sense tells you we should be focusing on Oil and Gas, that is where our revenue is. Without it we would not be able to bail out the fishery and forest industry time and time again. Randy likes to through things out there to stir up the pot and keep people listening so I guess he has done just that. But I for one and sick of all negativity that people like give out no matter how good something is going....There will always be some loser looking for something wrong and wanting to focus on that.

This is a wonderful announcement for NL and there are so many negative people in this province who are always looking to destroy our leaders even when they do great things.
We are so lucky to have a great leader like Williams. Too bad there are so many others who are so negative and jealous about the people trying making our province great.
Awesome job Danny!!

He may be a bit egotistical but he has accomplished so much for the province is such a short period of time, I believe it is warranted. I applaud Danny Williams and so should every resident of the province that has reaped the benefits of his hard work.

sportnewf from Paradise, NL writes: Danny, job well done, better yet - well said!
An announcement of this magnitude need not be associated with the comments that Mr. Simms used today.
And to the first comment by the butler did it ;
1. Sometimes it takes someone to lay it on the line to put people like Mr. Simms in their place, as they are somehow given the opportunity and platform to spread so much, how do you refer to it - oh yes, BS!
2. I doubt that his kids are ashamed as the rest of the province certainly seems to appreciate much of what he is doing. (just look at the size of the Opposition)
3. If you read any National news regarding comments that people from around the country make about the way he does things, you'll find quite a few that would like to have him working for them.
Let's get on with it and make life better for our kids.

Jimbo from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland writes: Randy Simms shouldn't even be on the radio and obviously has biased views on every issue, considering he is the 'Mayor' of Mount Pearl. He seems to go against everything and just wants to boost his political ratings for when he decides to run in a provincial election for the Liberals. Did Simms forget that it was Danny and the provincial government who gave Mount Pearl the money to complete the extension of the new East-West bypass road because he was too arrogant to pay the money that St. John's had agreed to pay? It was the oil money that made the funding possible for this project. The oil industry is the new properly managed industry in NL, and the fishery and forestry sectors were are the old industries of our province that were obviously mismanaged. Move on folks! Randy Simms is a Joke and should just concede as mayor and amalgamate Mount Pearl with St. John's so that we can continue to do what is right for our province.

fishy biz from NL writes: I've never been a huge fan of the premier's often caustic personality or one-man style of government, but this Open Line outburst was a very bad miscalculation by a fellow who should really know better. It was PR mistake, and it was a fundamental mistake. Speaking as a rural Newfoundlander, I can tell you that people often ask the same question that Randy Simms - another guy I'm no fan of - asked. The province's wallet grows fat from oil and yes, the infrastucture and fiscal standing benefits are obvious. But that hasn't necessarily translated into better health care. It hasn't translated into more jobs (the unemployment rate is up, the job numbers are down) in areas that need them. It hasn't improved the economic state of things outside the northeast Avalon. It hasn't improved education (which requires more than just building a school, by the way). I guess we can only hope that the premier is now irritated enough that he might be able focus on some of these issues a bit more.

Bayman from NL writes: That was awesome.
THAT is the message that the Premier would send to the skeptics, and pessimists in these forums.
The Premier's point was very valid. Getting too caught up in oil? Its the revenue generated from oil that will help to fix problems in health care, the fishery, transportation, etc.
The fact that people think he's throwing a temper tantrum, and his children would be ashamed, is irrevelant. I'll bet they're proud that their Dad has the balls to stand up, and put a fool like Simms in his place. I'd be short with Simms, too. A lot of people in the province listen to his show. That kind of message, even though it is only from a radio show host, can tarnish the fact that a great success was scored for the province today, in the minds of some people.
I thought it was great that Danny told him off , so to speak.
At the end of the interview, all Randy Simms could say was wow.....wow....wow....ok....
He was speachless! That was priceless.
Good job, Mr. Premier.

Telling it like it is from St. Johns, NL writes: The Premier was elected by the people for the people.
Who remembers back in late 1999 early 00's when people were so excited about Danny Williams coming into office. It was the worst kept secret in the Province.
Now those same people are bashing him because it was their perceived plan Danny Williams would fix all of Newfoundland's problems in a week of being in office.
If you don't like the fact Danny stands up for his actions and business dealings for the better of the province then might I suggest to those arm chair critics they resume they old, tried and true Newfoundland method of doing business - BEND OVER!

Aubrey from Mount Pearl, NL writes: What the hell is Randy Simms' problem ? If the revenue we will be receiving from oil was instead to be received from the fishery and forestry sectors, he would be asking why the Gov't. doesn't focus on the oil sector. Simms is so preoccupied with stirring up shite that a lot of what he spews out makes no sense. He's llike the troll under the bridge who runs up every so often to see what he can get on the go.
Danny Williams is the best thing that has ever happened to NL & Labrador but, like the lobster who was trying to get out of the lobster pot and was always hauled back in by the other lobsters, we, for some unknown GD reason, have to eat our own. Rob from Calgary/St. Johns, AB writes: Alberta's economy is focused on oil and gas and has been booming for years and is strong enough to weather economic storms like the current one. I think its a great that NL has the resources, a profitable business platform to develop them, and smart people to ensure the revenues are returned to the province and invested in the right places (infrastrucute, aiding fallen industries like the fishery ect.) for the future. Great job Danny....maybe some of us can come home soon and get a job. I agree there are far too many people in NL focusing on the negative issues. Mike from Alberta writes: I'm not defending the premier's scolding of Randy Simms, but these open line shows are fostering a negative attitude that is an embarrassment to our province. I moved to Alberta a number of years ago and return to NL frequently. Each time I am dumbfounded by the number of people who waste their time listening to the incessant whining on these call in shows. This attitude is non-existent in Alberta. People are busy working and trying to better themselves. They are not sitting by a radio waiting to hear the next caller ramble on about how they are being hard done by in life. Most of the callers to these shows are so lonely that this has become a means for them to feel valued. It's not informative. It's sad.

Paul from St.Johns, NL writes: Good job Danny. He's trying to move us forward and actually understands the concept of money, where it comes from, where it goes, how to prepare for the future, how to build for the future. How do we provide services, lower taxes, build infrastructure, pay the debt if we just waste away resources as the mostly liberal gov'ts have done? Hopefully the people who come after Danny will be equally attentive to the business end of life and gov't. Need to pay more attention to beyond the overpass, but have to keep in perspective as well the whole scheme of running a province.
Keep it up Danny and don't give in to the pessimists. While Simms' question may have some validity, why not just celebrate a potentially good deal, acknowledge he's trying to improve Nfld and be positive for once. Then go ahead and have a good debate some other day about where that money will go. Do we pay the debt? Do we let gov't workers be the only to benefit? What if we could reduce taxes of all nature to fishermen and loggers, provide cheap electricity across the province to attract business and make those here more competitive?
Come on, let's move forward.

Simms should have endorsed the announcement and let everyone bask in the ray of optimism, at least for one day. Now we all know that Marjorie is agreat Danny fan. But Randy did you really have to show your ignorance and short temper,by chopping her off at the knees.
l can't beleive that VOCM is paying you to vent your own personal vindetta on the Premier and those who disagree with you. l'am sure your employer dosen't want to get the short end of the stick when it comes to future interviews press releases and dealings with politicians. It probably wont do the City of Mount Pearl much good either.

don from Newfoundland & Labrador writes: First it was that the public servants at Eastern Health who should be shot then it was VOCM Radio host Randy Simms being told off because he dared to ask Danny a rational question. I can only imagine what a nightmare it must be to sit in the Cabinet room or any other room with Danny boy. Anger management classes for you my son! The pressure of running a basket case economy with more problems than solutions is getting to Danny. TAKE A VACATION!! Oops! I didn't mean to dictate to you Mr. Premier, dictating is more your style. The Premier's belligerent attitude and barely civilized tone is embarrassing to the good people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Like my dear old grandmother used to say: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Is it possible that the oil company executives were also subjected to that kind of bulldog mentality during the Hibernia South negotiations? If so, were they possibly subjected to threats and coercion? No wonder they agreed to a 50% royalty for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, what was the alternative? Perhaps one of the choices was no more access to Danny's oil field and other nasty and punitive measures until they agreed to sign on. To quote the dumbfounded Mr. Simms, WOW! WOW! Alright....

Gord from CBS, NL writes: I never did agree with The World According to Randy Simms which is inevitably his view of whatever the subject a caller chooses.
But while I listened to The Premier this morning on radio I kept saying to myself where's the timeline. A letter of understanding is fine but where's the beef?
Too bad Randy didn't ask the premier where the Access and Accountability legislation is he promised 3 years ago.

Keepin' it Real from St. Johns, NL writes: Danny Williams overshadows his own accomplishments with this type of petulant, tyrannical behavior. No one dare challenge Him!
A monkey could sign these deals given where oil has been the past few years.
I don't think I've seen the man more unhinged in his years as our Emperor, I mean Premier. No one is allowed to disagree with Him or to scrutinize anything.
Sounds like a dictatorship to me. He's trying to control the media now, is He?

Art from Calgary, Alberta writes: Danny I am not exactly a fan of your methods but I'm quite happy with your results since you became premier.
Newfoundland has a history of outspoken premiers from Mr. Williams all to way back to JR Smallwood. Premiers of the past lacked the negotiating skills Danny Williams possesses. Danny does not put a signature on the dotted line unless it is in the best interest of Newfoundland.
Do I often disagree with statements he makes or his aggressive nature? Yes.
The big picture is Newfoundland now has a Premier who is taking advantage of Newfoundlands many resources. The years of JR Smallwoods bad deals are still embeded in our memories. Look forward.
Premiers of the future, watch and learn.

Steve Butler from NL writes: Hum, well I always knew there was a silver spoon sticking out of Dannys mouth, I am surprised he did not choke on it today! How rude of randy Simms, the host of a raido show, to ask a question that provokes thought. He should be like the rest of Dannys puppets and speak only when told to. For a government that does all its business on Open Line you think Danny would be a bit more engaging as opposed to being the bully he usually is. I guess Randy and Steve Kent have had their last chat, Danny will not allow his little lap dog Kent to talk to Simms anymore. Should be interesting tomorrow morning to see what cabniet ministers are handed speaking notes and told to call Open Line. How many people on the hill are we the taxpayers paying to listen to the radio all day I wonder anyway???

Allan from Carbonear, nl writes: Great day for the Province, no doubt. Maybe Randy picked the wrong day to question Danny on other issues.
But those issues are also important to those on the other side of the overpass. Danny answered in a typical way that deflects attention away from the fact that he has no real answers. He came from the private sector. He can tackle a challange that he can control and see it to its conclusion, and for that the Province should be always greatful but he is not going to be able to solve all our problems, but his ego cannot handle that reality. He should have just said, we'll deal with those other issues in due course and we'll save that discussion for another day.

Grandfalls lost the papermill with help from the government, the power was taken by the province,80 million or more a year. On a day that there is an anouncement of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS coming to us (ONCE AGAIN!!!!) and a bright future for ALL OF US, including our children and grandchildren, we should be celebrating and thanking Mr. Williams for his dedication to this province instead of listening to Mr. Simm's trying to get his OPEN LINE fired up! Randy, I understand you want to get discussion going on your show but next time consider your topics with a bit of brains, ITS BILLIONS of DOLLARS BY, that can plant alot of new trees and invest in alot of aquaculture! ITS TIME TO FIND A NEW HOST VOCM......WAKE UP!

John from St. John's, NL writes: Shame on you Randy Simms. (LOL)
.... Keep publicly challenging Mr. Williams to think on his feet like that, and you could be appointed to a big job someplace (just to get you out of the way). Which would you rather: Being sent to Ottawa like Bill Rowe; or would you accept an appointment like Andy Wells got?
Maybe Randy should focus on being an Open Line Host instead of trying to be some sort of reporter / member of the opposition.
To be considered the best premier our province has ever seen, Danny is obviously doing excellent job as leader of the flock. No doubt, this is done at a considerable investment of time and effort - The stress must be huge. Maybe Danny needs a real vacation.... Leave the cell phone in the drawer and the lap top on the desk and get away from it all for a couple of weeks.

aubrey smith from GFW, Nl writes: Of course, Randy Simms can speak his mind about any issue he wants or he can entice others to voice their opinions as a devil's advocate but Simms can also make mistakes as VOCM host .I once heard Mr. Simms rake down a lady on air a few years ago by implying since she belonged to such and such a Shea Heights( ?) family , she too was flawed .I forget the exact issue she raised but I really thought Randy crossed the line that day.I wrote him and asked him to apologize but he didn't do so .I have never forgotten that one specific bit of viciousness and every time I hear him online I remember it .He's a good host but at fault on occasion .

Tom Fowlow from St. John's, NL writes: Good on him! Randy has been spitting his own political agenda for years now on VOCM. It was about time someone put him in his place. Why can't he just be pleased with what's happening in NL rather than constantly putting it down. Way to go Danny!!!

Ken Kentankerous from Alberta writes: Myself and the premier are of similar ages. He may have a higher IQ than myself, but he can get owly like myself. And why? It's more than age. It's the repetition of attacks. The premier was delighted in his view of optimism as regards the oil developments, and immediately negativity attacked his optimism. It's like a housewife slaving all day to make a loving and exciting meal for the hubby, while watching the 4 children, and then hubby comes home and complains about the lobster. It may be the interviewer's job to pose the question, but please have mercy on us elderly. We need love to.

Mark from NL writes: While Premier Williams absolutely deserves credit for having a strong energy team behind him and securing this beneficial deal for the province, his behaviour on Open Line was absolutely disgraceful. Mr. Simms asked a valid question and invited his audience to discuss the issues; Mr. Williams' contribution was to throw a hissy fit and complain about the 'crap coming out of Mr. Simms' mouth'. Is this the way a premier should conduct himself in public? Is this the behaviour that we, as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians want our Premier to display to the rest of the country and the world?
Say what you want about Mr. Williams' business acumen, but every time he speaks lately it seems like he is throwing another fit and I can't help but turn off the TV or radio.
You were elected, Premier, by the people of this province. You are not a dictator and you serve in public office at our pleasure - and not the other way around. If you wish to stay in your position, I suggest you treat the electorate with respect. We don't let Ottawa talk down to us; what makes you think you can?

Hans from St. John's, NL writes: VOCM’s open line shows are an important part of our community and I’m proud of them. I’m also proud of Mr. Williams’ comments today. His actions were challenged by Simms, and he responded and stood up for them. Media and journalists have every right to question and challenge people like Williams – but Williams also has every right to respond. Williams gave Simms a few opportunities to respond and Simms couldn’t defend his position. Kudos to Williams.
Williams also said some important things in that call. Our resources are NOT going to last, and we have to use what limited revenue they’ll still bring us to build Newfoundland to face this new era. What alternative did Simms propose? Nothing. Should Williams magically make fish appear in the sea? Should he “bailout” Abitibi, so the money goes into their corporate pockets instead of into the pockets of the workers? That’s what Simms seems to be suggesting. Williams is doing the only responsible thing – maximizing alternate revenues (oil) to compensate for the industries that are gone (probably for good), and worked to create actual sustainable infrastructure/industries. Meanwhile, he’s spearheaded the development of the best post-secondary education system in the country, launched the first (and only real effective) poverty-reduction program in the country, and forced multinational companies to treat the people of Newfoundland with respect. Fine in my books. The only people who seem upset are the corrupt cronies who had thought he’d line their pockets, instead of work honestly toward the betterment of Newfoundland. I campaigned strongly against him when he first ran for premier, and I couldn’t be more delighted to have been proven wrong about him.

Blair Brookfield from NF writes: Randy posed a legitimate question. I mean, it's become apparent that the Oil and Gas Industry hasn't been very beneficial to the local labor markets. Last I checked, the province still has a 15%+ unemployment rate. It is imperative we diversify into other industries. Yes, government coffers are overflowing, but it doesn't appear to be trickling down in the way of gainful employment for our citizens.
