Ryane Clowe
Ryane Clowe
Sharks make sure Clowe is qualified print this article
NHL

The Telegram

It may be called a qualifying offer, but the contract the San Jose Sharks have tendered Ryane Clowe of St. John's hardly qualifies as big news.

On Monday, in what is a formality, the Sharks sent Clowe a proposal that calls for him to make the same $1.6 million made last season.

Monday was the deadline for National Hockey League teams to inform restricted free agents like Clowe whether they would be getting such qualifying offers. As dictated by the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, qualifying offers can amount to five or 10 percent pay raises, or, in the case of a player at Clowe's salary level, no automatic increase.

By making such offers, teams retain compensation and right-to-match rights for restricted free agents, who still will be able to negotiate with other clubs as of Wednesday. However, their present teams will be able to match any outside offer or, if they choose not to match, would receive compensation in the form of draft choices.

If a team declines making a qualifying offer - like the Sharks did with forward Marcel Goc - that player becomes an unrestricted free agent, with no compensation attached.

The 26-year-old Clowe appeared in a career-high 71 games last season, collecting 52 points (22 goals and 30 assists). Over four years, in 162 career NHL games - all with San Jose - the 26-year-old has 41 goals, 55 assists and 160 penalty minutes.

Over the weekend, a number of reports had the Sharks offering the big winger for trade during the NHL Entry Draft in Montreal, but Clowe has made it clear he wants to stay in San Jose.

He is one of four players from this province who are set to become restricted free agents Wednesday, joining defenceman Adam Pardy of Bonavista (Calgary Flames), forward Teddy Purcell of St. John's (Los Angeles Kings) and goaltender Dan LaCosta of Labrador City (Columbus Blue Jackets).

Jason Summers from Outer Cove, NL writes: Well Bob, I hear that the RNC are looking for a psychic to solve a few unsolved cases. Apparently you can foresee the future. Clowe hasn't singed anything yet, he received a qualifying offer.

Congrat's boy, you've officially classified yourself as stunned.

On another note, Clowe should be looking in the same salary range as Jason Arnott. Very similar stats.

Lou from Newfoundland writes: Bob Spurrell, from what I know this story is right. I can't find anywhere that says Clowe has signed a contract only that the Sharks have given him a qualifying offer. Why would they qualify him if he already has a new contract?

TR from Alberta writes: Sorry Bob but you're a little misinformed.

Clowe was tendered a qualifying offer at 1.6 million which gives the San Jose the right to match any offer sheet he signed to by another team. The are WILLING to go up towards 15 to 15 million over 4 years if need be. If not they'll try and work out a contract extension this season.

He will not receive a raise this season unless an extension agreement is reached and that won't kick in until the 10/11 season.
