St. John’s lands new airline print this article
Porter begins service in October

People will soon have a new option when flying in and out of St. John’s.
Toronto-based Porter Airlines will expand its service to include the capital city beginning Oct. 5 and will offer four daily round-trip flights to Halifax and on to Ottawa. Three of those flights will continue to Toronto.
The president and CEO of Porter said when people fly with the airline they’ll see a difference in service.
“We pride ourselves on offering an elevated level of service. It’s a bit of a throwback to earlier times when travel was fun,” Robert Deluce told The Telegram last week.
For example, Porter’s passengers get complimentary snacks, beer and wine when flying, something most domestic airlines haven’t offered in years.
Marie Manning is the director of marketing and community relations with the St. John’s International Airport Authority.
She said the new airline will give travellers greater choice and greater frequency when flying.
In total, it will increase the number of seats to Halifax and Toronto by about 30 per cent, Manning said.
And landing and terminal fees will mean approximately $700,000 a year for the airport authority.
“Porter Airlines has built a reputation for providing a high-level service and convenience at a competitive price,” Manning said. “You talk to people who have flown with them and they just absolutely love the service.”
Deluce said St. John’s has been part of Porter’s business plan for some time.
The regional carrier started flying to Halifax seasonally two years ago, but recently made those flights year-round. Adding St. John’s is an extension of that service, said Deluce.
He acknowledges that the airline is expanding during an economic downturn when many other airlines are trimming routes from their schedules.
But he’s confident people in this province will be impressed with Porter, and Manning agrees.
“I think the growth of the airline itself is a testament to how well they’ve done (with customer service),” she said.

In Toronto, Porter lands at Toronto City Centre Airport on Toronto Island, close to downtown, as opposed to Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, which is 30 kilometres northwest of Toronto, where most major airlines land.
“We’re only two to three kilometres from a lot of major businesses, leisure and other destinations right in the downtown core (of Toronto),” Deluce said.
He said he’s proud of the fact that Porter uses the Canadian made Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft.
“It is very quiet (and) it’s fuel-efficient,” he said, noting that the planes have low emissions and burn 30 to 40 per cent less fuel than the regional jets they typically compete with.

Matt from NL writes: I've never flown Porter, but I know a few people who have, and they quite like it. Turboprops aren't so bad, and they're quite common outside the main corridors. I'd rather fly a Q400 (which I've been on many times w/Continental) than one of those bloody RJs that Continental uses most of the year and ACJazz uses from time to time. I think/hope they'll do well.

Of course, people here will still demand fares so low that company can't make a dime, because that's the way people are in this town. I won't be surprised to see people moaning that they should be given Porter service with Air Canada/WestJet aircraft at Marine Atlantic prices.

Matt from NL writes: I should point out that there are 2 different Matt from NL posting here - this comment and the one directly proceeding it are from one Matt (me), and the initial post seems to be from another Matt.

My apologies if I've accidentally misappropriated another Matt's screen name. I'll differentiate myself from now on. Thanks.

Michalina from Newfoundland writes: Porter’s passengers get complimentary snacks, beer and wine when flying ....ha ha...the passengers will pay dearly...Regrettably, Porter Airlines will be defunct in Newfoundland within months of operation just like Astraeus Airlines. Most Newfoundlanders these days fly into Pearson to fly elsewhere. Flying into Toronto downtown airport is not an option. Bye the way, the fares on Air Canada and Westjet are cheaper than Porter Airlines......Bye Bye Porter airlines.

Juanita from St. John's, NL writes: A small price comparison for a one-way flight from St. John's to Toronto on November 4:

Air Canada:
Tango (basic economy, change flight for $75 fee, non-refundable): $165
Tango Plus (change flight for $50 fee, non-refundable): $220
Latitude (change flight with no fees, fully refundable): $560

Porter Airlines:
Firm (basic economy, change flight for $50 fee, non-refundable): $149
Flexible: (change flight for $25, non-refundable): $279
Freedom: (change flight with no fees, fully refundable): $309

Clearly, with just a $30 difference between Flexible and Freedom, the Freedom flight is a great bargain, and so much cheaper than Air Canada that it just might be worth taking the turbo-prop. If they maintain this price difference (a big if , as we all saw what happened when WestJet first started flying here), and if their customer service outdoes Air Canada (THAT wouldn't be difficult!), they might have a shot. Will be interesting to see how they do.

Teresa from New Harbour, Nl writes: I am looking foreward to using Porter for my flights. I can't wait to be rid of Air Canada. Now we need to get our Direct Flights from St. John's to Europe back. I think its time. I am fed up with going to the Mainland & back over Newfoundland to get to England.

Jan from Newfoundland writes: More competition usually means better prices. Be optimistic!! Don't be putting down an airline that hasn't been given a chance here yet. Could it really be worse than Air Canada? I think not.

Alex from Toronto, ON writes: I'm a Newfoundlander living in Toronto. I've been hoping that Porter would expand service to St. John's for ages, and finally, they have!

I came on here expecting people to be ecstatic with the news of another flying option, and to see so many naysayers is diappointing to say the least.

Porter is an amazing airline. Their service is second to none. They are head and shoulders above both Air Canada and Westjet. Anyone who thinks otherwise is without a doubt, someone who hasn't flown with them. Porter is one of the very few airlines actually making money these days, and it's not a secret why.

Their fares are competitive, and often cheaper than Westjet or AC, and when you factor in a $60 cab ride each way to/from Pearson, the value is even more pronounced. Their planes are quiet and ultra-comfortable and their on-time record is incredible!

Folks, before you're too quick to dismiss them and write them off in a couple of months, give Porter a chance, you'll be pleasantly surprised and wish they flew to more places... as I do!

Jimmy John from NL writes: Tom from Terra Nova seems to know what he is talking about!!! It will be a hard sell and a very long round about way of getting to TO. I know folk who would drink and eat the cost of air fare on flights like that so it is beyond me how they will make any profit. Airline options are nice to have but only if they plan to stick around both in good times and challenging times. Lets wait and see how they survive flying in and out of here during the winter and foggy months.

Paul from St.Johns, NL writes: Sounds great to me. Price competition, apparently they offer good service, right to downtown TO saving taxi and time for business or backpackers. Also if you check their site they also connect into Boston, Chicago, NY, Montreal, Mt Tremblant for skiing, Thunder Bay, Que City and Ottawa. So some onward connections possible. I suppose if they added a FLA destination it would work well. Flight times shouldn't be too bad either as the plane is pretty quick and you won't get tied up at Pearson security and baggage and size. Give it to her!!

Vince from St. John's, NL writes: First of all, to dear old Michalina, did you book a flight on Astraeus or did you book on Air Canada because of your precious Aeroplan Points?? Thats what sunk Astraeus in YYT, that and the fact that Air Canada already had the monopoly BEFORE they re-added their UK connection the very minute Astraeus added service here.

Also to Matt, whats wrong with a free 'massage' before you hop on a plane to sit in a chair at 30 000+ feet in the sky? I don't know about you but thats what I call value added service !

For all the folks who have a FIRM grip on their Aeroplan cards, and who NEED to go throuh Pearson on Air Canada, NOT ANY MORE!

Continental Airlines will be a part of the Star Alliance Network(meaning they will accept the Aeroplan points) before Porter even starts service in YYT, Continental is joining the Star Alliance starting in September! Even though their 737 service is only Seasonal right now, I'd much rather fly the RJ-145 to Newark, than a larger more expensive to operate Air Canada's RJ-E190 to Pearson. From personal experience I can assure you that Newark Liberty Airport has many more optoins available to the International Traveller and is MUCH EASIER to navigate than that nightmare of an airport we've all been to in Mississauga.

To be quite honest, we are ALL so lucky with our population base to even have the option of a 2nd 'national' carrier(WestJet), the fact that we've also got Continental and now PORTER? We couldn't ask for anything better.

WAY TO GO PORTER!

To all you nay-sayers, I say, put your money where your mouth is and buy a ticket and then tell us what you think.

david from nl writes: If all you naysayers think you know it all when it comes to airlines, then I invite you to go out and start up your own airline.

Easiest thing in the world to do, is to criticize somebody else. And to do it without ever having used them before, well that's just ignorant and rude.

No wonder no big companies want to come here, cause Newfies got to be the cheapest and biggest complainers in the world. There's a reason why they call us stupid newfies. LOL

I for one welcome Porter to St. John's I don't care how much they charge for fares, if you can't afford it, that's your problem....start driving.

They are not obligated under any circumstance to have low fares to accommodate you - when you'll complain about them anyways as is the case most of the time!!!

Vanessa Jordan from London, Ontario writes: As a Newfoundlander, living in London ON. I am proud to see Porter opening there. I have worked for the Deluce family (two other brothers who also operated a non-domestic/passenger airline in Ontario) and trust me when I say they mean well and they work for the people, not for themselves. I think Porter will do well and being in NL right now on vacation, very happy to see another airline coming to town. Hopefully the competition will lower the prices of flying here. Good luck Porter!

AGF from Toronto, ON writes: I have flown Porter on a couple of occasions. It is in a different class all together from Air Canada and Westjet. More space and better service. The time lost in the slightly slower aircraft is more than made up for by avoiding Pearson and its associated delays. Not to mention the traffic driving into Toronto from Pearson. Trust me. Try it, you will like it.
